Filter horror stories

As a young miser, I'm in constant search of a solid filter that will clean my oil over a 3500 (or so) OCI, and let my engines live strong to 225K (or so) miles. This leads me to an old thread perhaps, but hopefully from a new - and more beneficial - angle...


I've spent a good portion of the afternoon searching and reading about why people like THIS filter and why people like THAT filter. It's easy to find people who use and like every filter brand out there, even Fram. So rehashing old threads and asking why guys like THIS filter and THAT filter would be redundant. Instead, I will ask for filter HORROR STORIES. Why SHOULDN'T WE USE A CERTAIN FILTER? And I'm not talking about a gasket that led to 1 or 2 spots on the driveway over a 5K OCI, but a big time reason to avoid buying that brand of filter.

Let 'em rip. Everything from K&N and Wix to Fram and PartsMaster.

No horror stories - other than a big puddle that was caught in time.

Any filter like Auto Advance, basic Fram, Supertech... etc will get your vehicle to 225K - provided you keep the oil level up, change oil & filter when necessary - and keep the engine interior free of gunk - using any SL/SM GF-3/4 oil.

That's correct. While I've not had frams on my '00 cavalier I have 101,000 on the car right now. I follow the 3 month/3000 mile deal myself. Everything else mechanically I have done for me but would do if I was able to.

Miser means - ST, Purolators plus and Advance auto clones . Most of the manufacturing flaws discussed are whether purolators are consistently being shipped with cuttings and burrs in its threads.
Horror stories seem to me to be the least reliable news and just add onetime manufacturing errors or mechanic error in application or mounting that would not be the basis of my selecting a brand of filters.

Well I don't have any horror stories. But I did look at a K&N filter at AZ a few months back, had a HUGE metal shaving on the threads. For a 12 dollar filter, thats #@$%!.

Don't know what kind of filter it was but was sitting at an old-fashioned gas station one day getting gas. Late 80's. A truck just got an oil change and was pulling out of the bay. It went about 20 feet when a bang was heard. The filter housing was thrown 30 feet across the concrete with oil being sprayed about 10 feet. Was that guy mad. He was thinking "what if that happened 5 miles down the road" instead of 20 feet out of the bay.

Just a few days ago I witnessed a new Bosch filter with mounting threads loaded with curled steel chips.

That Bosch sound like it rolled down the Purolator line.
