well first of all great site and just the info i've been looking for. Now i know the a ph16 and ph8 (fram numbers or the equivlent) commonly my strat with the 2.7 takes a ph16 with Mobil 1 5w30 with either a Mobil 1 or k&n filter and drain every 5000mi. I am interested in switching to a ph8 for the added bit of oil and filtration. while only 1/2 a quart more is it really worth it for the swap? also being as the filter is mounted in a vertical position will i experience any pressure drop due to the oversized capacity of the ph8? not really sure if the switch i worth it just asking for some opinions on the matter.

I think it is always worth it to use a larger filter. Sometimes a larger can does not mean a larger filter so you need to do some research on what the filter you will be using looks like inside and filter area. A search on this site will give you much info once you have the exact filter you are planning. I like to have the same bypass valve settings as stock but not sure it is really important. The Frams are not highly thought of but some models are not bad. Wix seems to be very good filter, K&N and Mobil 1 are good but expensive and Pureones are a good filter at a good price.

I agree with TR3 in that the primary benefit of going oversize is not additional oil capacity (although this is good), but potentially greater media area. Benefits include less chance of clogging, reduced bypass, potentially increased flow due to less restriction, more efficient filtration (oil travels more slowly through a given spot on the filter), and less stress on the media cartridge. BTW...Fram filters are best hollowed out and used as been can holders, rather than screwed onto an engine block.

I often need to read several posts to try to determine what model car a poster is asking about. It's easy to drop a nickname or an acronym in there, and it's more common now for car "names" to be just a series of letters and numbers, that could belong to any manufacturer.
