been reading abou different filters and their flow rates ect. it seems that synthetic media filters, have the worst flow rates! outside of Mobil 1. ive read alot abou purolator ynthetic filters, and oil flow restricitions. for a tight media, lik purolator, with a low to very low oil flow rate, what would happen then, as the car is running? the oil is getting pulled throguh the media without being filtered good enough? i also read, the pureone's rank just above Mobil 1 filter.

dont worry about it.

the oil is still being filtered and sorry to say...take some english courses or atleast a typing class at your local college ASAP!

Ziggy..

Filters do not regulate oil flow. Your oil pump does.

Should a filter have "low" flow to the point of not enough oil is coming out, then the pressure relief valve will open and your engine won't starve of oil.

Is there any oil filter out there then that is a happy comprimise of the two: high quality filtration + modest bypass valve setting so as not to go into action too much?

Yes
No
Maybe
It all depends on what you deem to be (fill in the blank)

What's wrong with a bit of bypass happening on occasion?
Your oil is typically being well filtered the rest of the time, so it's not like your sump is full of cruddy oil. It's basically full of oil that has been through the engine once after its' last filtering.
Assuming identical filter media and bypass pressure, a larger filter should have better flow because it has more area for the oil to flow through. Just like a small screen door won't let as much air pass through as a large screen door. Chances are, it still provides adequate air flow even if smaller.

So basically at this point, just use a top tier filter such as Mobil 1, Purolator PureOne, Wix, or even the Framx X2(Extra Guard these days I believe), and one can "forget about it" for the time 'till one wants to replace it.

OMG, will this flow nonsense never stop? Read Gary Allens test of the Purolator Pure One filter, other than cold start up he can't get it to go into bypass mode. Not at high RPM, WOT, quick acceleration, not at all. Look at the flow rates in Filter Guys E-core filter, something like 18 GPM at 8 PSID, this is more flow than my car can output at redline (not considering the oil pump releif valve).

Don't worry about all the junk you read and all the opinions ,use any decent quality filter. This flow vs.filtration is reading and not having a clue. Listen to the filter guy, a pro in the filter arena.

How do you determine a "decent quality" filter?

any filter 'cept the orange one. Read Dad2leia's post for a general idea.

The oil is "pushed" through the media, not "pulled".
If the media is too restrictive, the bypass valve opens, which is a common occurence on cold start up anyway.
For the average vehicle, even your so called "low flow" examples provide far more than enough flow.
