I just bought 2 Wix filters in the past week and I can't for the life of me see any diff. in them except one is $3.00 more than the other one. One is 51356 (fits my Nissan X-terra) $9+ and 51357 (I'm told, fits my Polaris RZR 800) $6+. I,m also told that the Fram Extended Guard XG7317 is the same as the Wix 51356. If they are all the same I can just buy one filter for both vehicles, that would be nice! Anyone help me w/ this?
 
Thank you mopar_monkey!!! Looks like I can use the same filter for both vehicles, I'm really stoked! Any info on the Fram XG7317. It appears to be the same too.

There's some curious distinctions between the filters. The 51356 is a finer filter. In Wix it has a broader span on the bypass valve. 8-11 while the 57 is just 8. Fram recommends the PH5343 which is identical in every way to the XG7317 ..and the PH5343 is a replacement for many filters that share the 7317 number from other mans. Both Frams (5343/7317) have a higher bypass setting - 13

It might suggest that fine filtration isn't desired or required in the Polaris application, but FULL filtration is.

Gary, would U recommend the Fram XG7317 for either the Nissan X-Terra or more importantly to me, the Polaris. Or would the Wix be better for the Polaris?
 
Hard to say. For the X-Terra, take your pick. If you're going to do an extended drain, I'd probably go with the XG. If not, flip a coin on just about any filter other than the standard orange can.

Power sport applications tend to be different in that they can have higher flow requirements due to minimum flow rates at idle and (in some Asian designs) incredibly broad rpm ranges. Let me say that I don't think that this is any TRUE issue with the FRAM XG other than the XG is marketed as a 10k filter and that they're not recommending 10k usage for your Polaris. Power sport engines also tend to be dirtier than passenger car apps, loading the filter faster. That's my reasoned opinion.
 
Thanks Gary, that's kinda what I thought too. Fram XG it is then for the Polaris. It's gotta be better than the stock filter they put on them and less expensive to boot.
 
The OEM will tend to hammer you for motor cycle/power sports or even mundane power equipment filters. They're just such a small segment and mostly seasonal. That makes the real estate on the shelf very high $$$.

This is where the Wix site is a good gauge (imo) where spin-on filters are used. There you can see if anything special is on their radar. If it shows a common passenger car number, you can be pretty confident that there are no hidden liabilities to applying that across most brands.
