Filter Choice for M1 EP?

My 2006 Camry's factory warranty runs out in about 10,000mi, so I'm thinking ahead a bit: I've got PYB in it now, and enough Mobil Clean 5000 to last me until the warranty runs out. After that, I'm thinking of switching to M1 EP, as it'll save a bit of money, as well as cutting back on resource consumption. The 2AZ-FE engine is pretty easy on oil, so I don't doubt M1 EP will do well.

Mobil claims that M1 EP does not require any special filter for their 15,000mi/1 year OCI, but I want to err on the side of caution.

Currently I use Toyota OEM filters (90915-YZZF1) and have 12 of them stashed away (they were on sale, what can I say?

). I would imagine these would be satisfactory for an extended run. Thoughts?

As for aftermarket filters, I am partial to Purolator PureOnes, and would imagine they'd have little problem going the distance. Mobil 1 filters are also an option, but I don't think they're worth the money. Naturally, I'll stay away from the OCOD, but would consider other Fram products (Extended/Tough Guard).

Any thoughts/recommendations? Would the OEM filter be satisfactory? If so, fantastic, as I already have a bunch. :)

Pete I'm like you, P1 or bosch. I'm sure the OEM filter can do it also. When the warranty is up it would be P1 or bosch for me.

Perhaps, but as I mentioned before, I don't really think they're worth the money.

Say I buy the M1 EP at Wal-Mart. Ok, that's $27.50. M1 filters are $12.99 at the AutoZone near me. I pay 9% tax. Total cost of $44.13.

Compare that with Mobil Clean 5000 changed every 5,000 miles with the OEM filter. I pay 9% tax on the $11 each oil jug costs, and $3.80 for each OEM filter (no tax, as I bought them online). Total cost for three oil changes is $47.37.

A $3.24 savings with the M1EP/M1 filter. Slightly less money, perhaps, but I'd save more with a PureOne filter ($10.87 in savings, assuming the filter is $5.99) or even more with the OEM ($13.60 savings).

As far as I can tell, the Mobil 1 filter doesn't do anything particularly better than, say, the PureOne that makes it worth the doubled price.

I'd use the filters you have without question. If you're really worried, you can change them at 7500 miles and top up the oil. If I didn't have them I'd probably go P1 or classic, but you have them, and they're fine for 15,000 miles from what I've seen.

Agreed.

I would agree with much of the suggestions above...

A Purolator PureOne (or Bosch Premium..a clone of PureOne) would work and is half the price of a Mobile 1 filter, and filter equally well.

2AZ-FE requires an oil filter change every 5k-6k miles. Mobil 1 Ep is great choice if you want to extend your OCI.

Indeed?

*looks* Outstanding.

Hopefully they'll offer such a deal in the future when the car's out of warranty...

After reading and rereading all of your posts (sorry, even when doing this, I'm a quick scan reader - I can miss stuff) ..I see no indication of your annual mileage. I didn't bother finding out what the Toy warranty was to calculate what a 2006 would have for a fuzzy average in 3+/- years.

Do you indeed do 15k or more in one year's time?

Originally the 2AZ-FE had a 7500 mile OCI from Toyota. Only when the 3.0 v6 had sludging issues and Toyota reduced the OCI on all their vehicles to 5000 miles did this change. Recently, the OCI on this engine has been increased to 7500, and now via TSB 10,000 miles. On one filter. And obviously, for these recommendations Toyota is assuming the Toyota filter being used.

At 7500 miles, every filter I've cut open from this engine has looked great and ready for more.

As a rough average, I drive about 12,500 miles per year (bought the car four years ago in March of 2006, it just rolled over 50,000 miles last week).

Got a link to the notice increasing the OCI to 7,500 and the TSB increasing it to 10,000 miles?

If confirmed, that would greatly ease any qualms I have about pushing the Toyota that long.

Oh? The ones at the store here say they're good to 10,000 miles. Maybe the mileage differs for various sizes?
