Car is a 2005 Chevrolet Impala (3.4 V6) with about 34k miles. I drive 75 highway miles one way each day. I use Mobil 1 OW/30 full synthetic. I plan to do OCI's based on the oil life monitor. I expect to go from 10k-12k miles based on my driving habits. Oil filter is a Napa Gold (Wix). Can the filter hold up this long or should I change it out at a certain interval?

The Napa Gold is a premium filter and is used by a lot and can be pushed to those limits and beyond. Now if it was the OCOD, then it would be a different story.

I will disagree respectfully with these fine members. I would swap it out at approx 7500. That is as long as I am comfortable taking a standard filter. The Napa Gold is a Wix so it is a premium standard filter but it is still just a regular paper media filter and IMO not a good choice for such a long OCI. Especially such a tiny filter as the PF47 style filter your application uses( Napa Gold # 1040 )

If you want to push filters to 10K and beyond then step up to filters designed for it. In no particular order...

Bosch Distance Plus
Purolator PureOne
K&N
Mobil 1
Royal Purple
Amsoil

JMHO.

One of the high end Fram extended guards or a Bosch Distance plus would be more suited to the long mileage, but since you are racking them up so fast i would be willing to bet the NAPA should hold up okay too; just that some filters are made to go longer time/mileage than others.

IMO, nearly any filter would Handle that interval and driving style just fine. You'll be spending a lot of time at steady-state operating temp, and the miles will rack up quickly. Don't change a thing.

If you're worried, sned out a sample for analysis and if the insolubles come back SAT, then you're good to go. You'll also see how the oil handled the interval, which will most be wonderfully, giving yu additional peace of mind. To each his/her own, so upgrading to a better or "better" filter is won't hurt.

Here's a wrinkle to throw in the mix. If GM says use the oil life monitor to determine the OCI, then do they also say to change the filter at some point (time or mileage) regardless what the OLM says? If not, then GM is indicating that the filter (the ACDelco I would assume - a mid tier filter) is also good based on the OLM. If they don't address the filter separately from the OLM, then seems like a "normal" filter would be good to go also.

I think GM says for my Zee to change oil/filter (if using synthetic oil) when OLM = 0%, or after 1 year ... whichever comes first. Never recalled them saying to change the filter at X miles if the OLM is still not at 0%.

GM has factored this even before the OLM. They told you to change the OEM spec'd filter (ANY filter meeting OEM spec's) ever OTHER time if your OCI was based on mileage (15k/year).

There is no need to change the filter early. Filter life is determined mostly by how many high loading, insoluble laden ..fuel enrichment warm up miles. The rest hardly count at all.

The OP will have every cold start that any other daily driver has. What they won't have is about 70 miles of minute loading that's produced from an engine with a good fuel management system ..which we all (by now) have in our daily drivers ..at least those doing that type of mileage (yeah, there's some glutton for excess that drives a Hemi Cuda back and forth to work on a 70 mile commute and pours 8 of our wallets into it daily - that is (hi, Soopah-Boosah) there are always exceptions)

Not sold on GM's [censored] on changing the filter every other oil change, fresh oil gets a new filter

As you wish. Just keep in mind that the spec's you see on the box are when the filter is shot, not when you put it on. The nominal rating is more indicative of typical performance. Changing the filter early will reset the curve of filtering efficiency.

Just change your oil twice as much as you do now for the oil and filter. Same deal. Is your filter shot? Any way or manner not up to the task it did last time? Of course not.

So the efficiency testing per the ISO 4548-12 test spec (listed on some boxes or on the manufacture's website with the efficiency spec) is done when the filter is at it's "shot" condition and loaded up with debris?

You got a reference or link saying so? Never thought that would be the case.

Yeah, that's actually the first I've heard of it. I'm curious.
