my wood privacy fence has been disassembled and put back together. The individual planks are stained but have many holes where nails, etc. existed from old hinges, screws, etc. what is an easy and simple substance to plug the holes? Not trying for perfection but a little better without great work. Thanks!

That Elmer's wood putty is fairly cheap and would serve your purpose.
Sawdust mixed with wood glue would be stronger though.

jam toothpics with a good glue, then saw them off flush, they will swell a bit from humidity.
That is what gives wood character. Its a fence not a Stradavarius
We have wood bee's here that love to eat threw wood and make hives. Everyone calls them wood bee's but I think they are actually Peach Borer's.
I just use a little silicone to fill it up. You can find a lot of colors and it's really time effective. I can fill 5-10 holes in less then 3 mins and have them nice and flush.

Yes, it's a ongoing battle. I don't go all out against them but they love our front porch. We had to rebuild it a few years back after a tree fell on it after a hurricane. So I just try and keep them out of it. Its a pain in the butt tho. I'll find 10 new holes each year.
