How do you really feel about Fiber End caps / Fiber End Disc

I know many people say FRAM is the only one but I know many Factory Oil filters come with Fiber / cardboard end caps.....

Personally I have seen some steel end caps that have came un-glued and the black glue stuff was in my oil and oil filter when I cut it open. It was a purolator and I even showed pics here.

Now FRAM says when you glue 2 surfaces together if you use the Fiber End disc you get more surface area...

I sorta know this is true b/c a buddy of mine put on the fake Brembo brake covers on his Mustang and on the You Tube Directions it said to file down the place on the plastic that you are going to add glue b/c it makes more surface area and the glue will stick better.

Also sorta think of a HEATSINK on your CPU you on Computer... Why they use a heatsink well to give it more surface area..

Or remember when you were a kid and you made french fries and you took a knife and just cut them stright it seemed to cook differently.

As to when you were able to VVVV cut the Fries sorta like Wendys Fries.... They sorta cooked better or faster...

Perhaps thats a bad analogy.

However what do you guys really feel about fiber end caps.

I know FRAM Uses Steel end caps on the FRAM ULTRA and they say its b.c they have Wire backing and they need the steel end caps b/c they are useing much more glue also that is a LONG OCI oil filter.

So what do you think????

Really?????

Are you talking about the cellulose ones? If so, those are common on tons of European cars (and of course some American ones). They seem to work just fine.

No Im serious and you can see others feel the same.

Im just starting to feel that steel end caps might not glue as good as Fiber end caps.

I mean its just possible.

I mean why do most the Factory Oil filters use Fiber End caps.. or carboard or whatever you want to call it.. Simular to FRAM.

Lots of people here use FRAM TOUGH GAURD and thats Fiber End Caps.

Also yes I have seen video when FRAM oil filters were cut open and yes they were collaped but who knows how many miles were on that filter...

I personally have seen Purolator metal end caps fall apart.... also look at all the Purolator Pure Ones as of late that people have cut open and they are in bad shape.

I dunno.

Starting to think different here.

Perhaps the glue that bonds the filter element to the end caps works better with a fiber based end cap is better then metal / steel.

Its less surface area on steal / metal...

Im starting to think perhaps filters with fiber end caps shouldn't be considered as a bad product.

I mean do we really have any real DATA? that Shows?

Plus people seem to say the TOUGH GUARD is a good Oil Filter...

What do you really think and why?

that is my question

Yes.

but what about the oil filter that uses cellulose blended with synthetic glass and polyester fibers???

Reemmber a oil filter has to catch dirt and trap dirt / keep it in the filter.....

Again when you glue / bond 2 porous surfaces together you get a better bond / HOLD .. I know this..
this is s fact.... I mean we all know this.

That's basically true. The only thing I don't like about some of the fiber end caps is that they are not thick enough to ensure they stay flat and rigid. Some of the OEM Honda filters made by Honeywell/Fram have thicker fiber end caps than most, and they obviously stay flatter and are more ridged than their same counterparts in the Fram brand line. So Honda has specified to have thicker fiber end caps, and I agree with that decision.

That is TRUE... on a HONDA A02 the end caps seems thinker or stronger or more sturdy compared to a FRAM EXTRA GAURD.... I have never opened a TOUGH GAURD YET.... I have opened a FRAM ULTRA and I see why they use Metal End caps.. B/c there is so much filter material and that metal screen.. and they use much more bonding glue or whatever its called.

However your correct the Honda A02 End cap feels different than at least the FRAM EXTRA GAURD.

Not sure about the Tough Gaurd yet.. I have to cut one open.

Im glad to read what you said and wonder what other people really think.

b.c as you agreed you would think glue would bond to fiber end caps better then flat steel.

I guess it depends on the type / quality of the fiber end cap.

FRAMS work just fine. Thousands are installed every day. Look at craigslist, and how many vehicles are for sale with 200K miles. Many of these vehicles use modular ford engines (of course), but many of them were maintained somewhat indifferently with oil changes whenever, with whatever. They are fine. They work fine. Please in the name of all that is holy make this the last post on the possible deficiencies of the FRAM oil filter. AMEN.

Fiber end caps are not s problem at all. Not only do they seal to the media better, but they offer some flexibility, so when the media is getting pushed or pulled by the oil in a low flow scenario, it doesn't tear.

I used to be biased againt fiber end caps. That was ignorant of me. Now that I understand the construction and purpose, I embrace the use. Now, I'm not married to fiber end caps; it's not a "must have" in my garage. But I don't fear them and I do use them now. Jim Allen convinced me after his trip to Frams testing facility. I have have many private converstaions with him. I trust him and his decades of automotive experience and mutiple publications he's written.

I have determined through lots of research (mine and others) that most filters all work well enough for any OCI I'd ever use them for, and that brand, efficiency, design and construction are all topics BITOGers argue about, but none of which really matters for the typical O/FCI.

There have been, are now, and continue to be (literally) millions of vehicles safely protected on the road with fiber end caps. And we need to get over it.

They work just fine, in fact maybe even better in some applications. Example...when the media begins to fold under pressure, the fiber end cap bends down to relieve that pressure so everything is ok. If it had metal end caps they would not bend at all and the media goes RIP, leaving a nice bypass hole behind.

They have been used successfully on many millions of engines over decades. I have no issues with them. Any filter, regardless of construction materials, depends on the quality of the build. Ed

I never thought of that... now that makes sense.. I just dont understand how I see you you tube people say over and over FRAM LIED to me for years and look at the fiber end caps yada yada and I feel like saying.. How many years you use FRAM???? and most say in the video since they were 16 years old and most are now in the 40s and I feel like asking how many miles does your Car have on it.. a few videos they said 160K 120K . I mean thats not bad and the car is still going.

I also felt like asking them in all your time using fram did you ever have a engine related problem due to the filter? Im sure none of them did ...... b/c as most said they used FRAM for years....

but what you said makes a good point.

Fiber endcaps don't bother me in the slightest and as mentioned I believe they actually have a few advantages. But not a deal breaker for me either way. My favorite value filter right now is the Wix made Napa Silver with metal endcaps. My favorite high efficiency and longer OCI filter is the fiber endcap Fram Tough Guard. And I still have a soft spot for Motorcrafts even though several have been posted on here with metal endcaps that popped off.

With the spring pressure in the can holding everything tight does it really matter unless you cut the can open? The only fiber end disc oil filter I knowingly used was the Fram orange can. In my Fords that I used them in I had consistent dry starts from poor anti drain back valve action. This may have had nothing to due with the fiber end caps/discs.

It could have been related to the fiber end caps if the fiber end cap wasn't very thick and stiff, and deformed enough to where the ADBV wouldn't seal 100% against the end cap.

Probably not so I don't get wound up about it, although I don't like it.

Its the nitrile ADBV, if you have every cut open an orange can you can tell the ADBV isnt made of the highest quality materials. The TG and Ultra however, are of great quality.
