I remember they always had this problem, I am wondering if you guys know of a fix for FF suddenly using a bunch of resources...as soon as I close FF, CPU use goes down drastically...

This is FF running on Ubuntu 10.10 ...

It's gotta be some FF add-on/plugin that you have installed or some Ubuntu-specific issue. I run FF 3.6.x on 4 different Windows machines and don't see this issue.

I dont. Out of curiosity I checked `top` on my Laptop running Gentoo Linux. I have Fx 4.0b8 running for about a week straight. The most usage is from X. I fired up a Youtube and the most usage is plugin-container at 32% followed by firefox and X at a tie using about 2% each. Have you tried running it in safe mode to eliminate some plugin or setting?

That's a lot. Check to see if your Flash is stuck. However, that problem seems to be solved now, and when it was happening, closing the browser didn't shut down Flash, and the usage stayed high. If you check your processes, the Flash is called npviewer.bin, if I recall correctly. Be sure there aren't multiple instances or one hung instance.

My CPU usage is nowhere near that. I am using 10.04, so it may be a different set of issues. Did you check the Ubuntu forums?

Yep - this is not that unusual it seems - Just google "FireFox CPU hog" and you will see what I mean - I am surprised I got no replies about how hugely common this problem with FF is and has always been, whatever the OS is. I just thought there might be some new developments about it, but it seems Mozilla is at a loss on how to solve this problem of CPU hogging by FF...

After FF, Gnome system monitor and VINO server look like they use the CPU a lot, too...
No idea what that VINO server is...

EDIT:
Hmmm....this might be it ??? (in addition to FF?):

"...I have found that Vino-server really does not like animated things on screen, especially in the panel at the top. I had a CPU monitor and a skype icon with a flashing alert flag on it, keeping up with these changes maxed out the CPU and made the remote session very unresponsive. Removing skype and the CPU panel applet seems to have fixed it for me...."

Vino server is the application that allows others to see and control your desktop; basically what Windows or mac would call "screen sharing", using the VNC protocol. If you don't use it, you can disable it.

I didn't see where I can disable VINO, I just killed the VINO process...now the CPU use is dropped to around 15-20% (with FF and Chrome running)
How does one disable it?
Preferences--> Remote Desktop --> I have "remote viewing" UNCHECKED. (does that mean VINO is disabled?)

Thanks.

Thanks Drew - I had already done that when that original thread was posted..it did help.
However, seeing that my CPU use is around 10%-15% after getting rid of that VINO thing (remote desktop appl. that i have no use for anyway), I am beginning to think FF may not have been the main culprit at all...

Last night FF started loading something on my computer and I thought I had a virus. Did it again this morning...very annoying when your trying to surf the net.

FF isn't going to just load something onto your computer unless you have auto-update turned on in Firefox.

That sounds like the plugin container. Did it happen when you did something that used flash?

I got rid of the plug-in container as you suggested before. It's definately FF because it's running when I view the running processes.

Update on mine: CPU usage remains low at/around 10-15% since getting rid of VINO. Almost 100% sure now it wasn't FF. (Sorry, Fox!).

So if any Ubuntu users getting high CPU usage, see if it's due to VINO.

and btw, killing the process is all I needed - it never returned, despite never finding a way to "disable" it..I think as long as remote desktop viewing is not active, VINO plays nor role, thus didn't return. I never saw it again under "processes" after several restarts...

I've had nothing but problems since FF automatically upgraded from 3.6.11 -> 3.6.12.

First, I can't log into Gmail from my main PC (and IE works just fine) so I've had to use FF 4 Beta. Now my laptop upgraded itself and GMail just sits there "loading".

This is a known and reported issue with 3.6.12 and it's really ticking me off. I tried reloading 3.6.11, but no luck.

What a POS.

You might want to have chrome as a sort of a "backup" browser:

although my main browser is still FF, sometimes I use chrome some video/AV type stuff - Youtube playlists, Videos on Hulu, etc.
I watch Hulu connected to my LCD TV, and with FF i have noticed a slight audio lag, but not with chrome, when watching episodes of "Lost" in hulu.

pic/video quality is excellent (@ 480p, connected to 40" LCD via VGA cable) with both FF and chrome...

( I hate that i can't open every bookmark on a new tab with chrome with a single click - always have to open a new tab, THEN click on the bookmark - otherwise it opens in CURRENT tab - apparently there's no fix for this in chrome )

That's pretty weird. I've got Vino installed (probably part of the default install), but never use it. It's not running in the background, either.

At least the latest Flash is behaving itself better than the previous incarnations. It's actually working far better than Flash in the office on Windows.
