Feeler thread: Interest in dissecting a 7.5K FRAM

Last Friday, I finally changed the oil and filter on the Saturn after 10.5 months and roughly ~7500 miles on the oil/filter. A combination of Havoline 5w30 and Chevron 5w30 were used during that time, with roughly 2 qts of make-up oil added to the 4 qt sump.

The filter used was a FRAM Extra Guard PH3614. No weird start-up noise, nothing. Doesn't appear to have collapsed either.

If there's enough interest, I'll go through the hassle of tearing this filter apart.

BTW-FYI, I dissected a FRAM PH8 with over 15K miles on it. It was on a delivery van for maybe 8 months or more. It looked perfect.

I have to admit to a sample of one for the Frams I have cut up. One look at it, and I never bought another. That was before there was a BITOG. However, of all the ones I have seen cut open here, I have no reason to doubt all the orange can ones are junk. It is not the cardboard end caps that bother me so much as the gross lack of filter media, half much as an ST and a third of an AC.

They do have some better lines, but they need to be compared to a Pure One, Mobil 1, etc. Most of the ones here using up market filters aren't impressed with the better Frams. And how about a rip off $12 for a CH 9018?

Maybe they figure the oil filters are not really taxed anyways so something cheap will do. ??

I cut a Fram apart on my Accord after 6k miles. It looked fine. The consensus here seems to be Hondas are easy on oil.

Pure mostly-uneducated speculation..

Mr. Magoo,

I have posted a few times that Fram only supplies HALF of the Honda filters and Filtech Inc. still making up the other half of the supply.

Few seem to believe this, but I am certain and can find the Honda (non Fram) at any number of dealers or distribution channels.
