Feeding Chickens Bread

A friend of mine increases his egg production by 1/3 when he adds bread to this layer's feed. Just regular loaf bread. For the life of me I cannot figure out why. Do you have any ideas?
 
I'd say it makes no sense, and uh AI agrees 😉

Well, the guy who told me is the one giving me eggs every week. He's not lying. I wonder what else is coming into play??
 
He brought me a dozen this morning. I asked him what he was feeding feeling there must be some deficiency. He said he
is feeding laying mash....
 
We feed ours layer crumble as the base diet. They also get lots of vegetables like kale. Sometimes they get stale bread and table scraps. Vitamins in the water. They lay eggs like crazy.
 
Perhaps the bread is fortified and the chickens are nutrient deficient in something?
Egg layers need a lot of calcium. They are supposed to get it the same way humans should. No, not mostly dairy.

I eat chicken on bread and I don't lay eggs.
