Filter shrinkage?

Given the original used a leaf spring, it would be tough to make the filter element any longer inside a shorter can.

Possibly has more pleats, or it could be deeper pleats. The center tube diameter might give a clue if it were smaller diameter on the shorter one. Not definitive, but I assume the OP isn't interested in cutting open $25 worth of oil filters. Maybe used cut open at some future date.

Yes, if the pleats are deeper (due to a smaller diameter center tube) and/or have a higher number of pleats, than the media area could be the same, or even more depending how the longer one is designed. Are the can diameters the same? Can't tell from these photos - I'd assume they are.

Date does does show the shorter one was made 207 days after the longer one.

The dates codes are on the filters. These are Fram date codes 338 and 131 day of 2024.
My two PH4967 are date codes 24255ab, the other 24235ab. New N1 size both. I don’t see this kind of code in code look up thread. I Assume it is 255 and 235 day of 2024

Interesting. 'Without having dimension details' almost 'looks' like the "4967" on the right is really the longer 4386 application. In normal circumstance the 4967 is the shorty version of the 4386. It is analogous to the metric thread versions of shorty 6607 vs the longer 7317. Other than seeing the size difference, no idea what FB doing here.

Sometime during summer 2024 they reduced the size to match the Toyota N1 size. Maybe the N1 was matching some other company when it came out, who knows. The one on the right is the old 4967 size. Toyota called it the F2. I cut the PH 4967 open, light leaks, same metal seal issue. The Fram media has less light spots, or sparkles, holding it on a very bright led flashlight, looking by eye, than the Toyota.
I think thats a pretty sensitive test actually as the eye can see tiny hole sparkles coming through, but otherwise without bright light behind, wouldn’t have the definition to see the holes.

Following up on my previous post, checked the FB Fram website for dimensions of the FE4967. It lists the 'current' length as 2.9" which is standard for the shorty 4967 across their other filter tiers and x ref equivalent to the Purolator 14476 shorty length. So, based on that information, 'if' the one on the left is the current FE4967, then the one on the right longer than standard/spec 4967 oil filter. Interestingly, Fram does not currently list a longer 4386 in the FE application, but does for their other filters, ~.5" longer. I can't measure on the right, but would 'speculate' ~1/2" longer.

Here is the thread I started a couple weeks ago to show the downsizing. No speculation and thinking, this is what it is because I have them in my hands.

Just back from a WM trip, as I posted the current FE4967 is the 'standard 4967' application size, ~3" long. Which would be the left one in the OP. At some point FB must have been using a 4386 application size calling it the FE4967. Normally when a manufacturer or end user consolidates applications it's to the shorter size ie, 6607 for 7317, 4967 for 4386. For whatever reason it appears First Brands was doing the opposite for FE4967, odd. So, to answer the OP query, I would say FB now using the correct application size for the FE4967. In this specific case, I'd think of it less as cost cutting, more as now using the correct application size filter. As an aside, I did not see any Fram filters in the 4386 size, even though excepting FE they are listed on their website. I do see a PH4386 available at Lowes, that said perhaps FB is consolidating all 4386 to the 4967 which imo would be a cost cutting move.

look at date codes at Walmart, and here. Literally op put the proof in pictures. The 4386 is about 3.5” long, old 4967 3”, and new 4967 on the left about 2.7”. Same as Toyota F1, F2, and N1.
