Five Guys and In-n-Out are OK, but I prefer Smashburger.

Five guys is decent but its always a bit heavy afterwards.
I prefer Smashburger for semi fast food...

Fat Burger
Culver's gets my vote, beating out Five Guys. Max and Erma's has pretty good burger on sale weekly. Mickey D's has actually improved after being swill for a half century and should at least get a shout out for trying

Last time I went to 5 Guys I saw this.
With small fries and water it would be over $12 for lunch.
I walked out and went to Noodles and had lunch for under $5.00.
But if forced to go to a premium burger joint it would be a stand alone place in Golden Colorado.

You must get noodles with no meat then... Any noodles at Noodles and Company here starts around 7.50 for a small bowl with any meat... No meat starts at 4.99.
If you understand how Five Guys works, the little hamburger (starts at 4.99 here) is one patty. The Hamburger (starts at 6.99 here) has 2 patties.
There is not nearly the price difference you make it out to be for "equivalent sizes". Just saying... Very possible to get out of Five guys under 10 bucks with a burger and fries and a water... Oh, and Free peanuts.

The best burgers are usually the small chains where you can order it the way you want. I usually get medium rare. Fuddruckers is also pretty good, there aren't that many around though. Five guys is good, it's usually best when it's fresh off the grill so when it's not that busy, they're great. If they're slow and tied up with other orders, it can sit there a while and then it's just mediocre. McDonalds is actually getting better with their 1/4 pound burgers, they're using fresh meat and making it on the spot instead of having them sit in the warmer where they taste like cardboard.

Here in Utah there is a chain called Crown Burger. That's probably my favorite. They have some of the best pastrami for their burgers. And their onion rings are worth it by themselves.
I like Five Guys, and will go there with family. It took me a while to figure how to have them make my burger so I like it there.
Habit Burger is pretty good too.
I used to be a big fan of In and Out, but the last several times I've went there they under cook my burger. I love a medium steak, but my ground beef has be cooked all the way through. I'm getting to where I don't think I'll go to In and Out any more.
I used to like Culvers when I lived back in Kentucky. They really knew how to cook a burger right. But I've tried Culvers a couple times since they've expanded out here in the West, and I haven't been impressed enough to make an effort to go back.

Im a fan of Cracker barrels iron skillet burgers.
We have a local burger joing in the cincy area called mad mikes and it is pretty good as well. Similar to five guys.
For a fast food burger I like Whataburger when I can get down south.
