Farewell, Nissan Altima

I was thinking proletariat, which is the working class.

Recall reading some stuff in old days about the exploitation of proletariat. I just remembered that. Had a socialist friend and he gave me a book or pamphlet ... I lost contact with him but heard that he is a liberal now and has moved towards the center. He must be driving nice cars now! lol

Guys, while you and I like to poke fun at the Altima and most of us wouldn't own one, it's yet another sedan offering that's going away.
What is good about that?
Altima is type of vehicle that when passes you never take a look at it. No one will remember it. It was appliance vehicle galore. Replaced by some appliance SUV.

I have mixed feelings since I really liked these cars in the right trim, but mine was a total piece of junk. I was astounded back when Nissan decided to get competitive, actually seemed to care about performance, and offered this car with a V6 and a manual, spitting right in the face of the Maxima. It was a REALLY fun car. I've been watching them over the years slide backwards downhill turning into appliances for people who don't care what they drive. In Dallas, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an abused, smoking Altima. I think they finished it off slowly, dropping the manual, then going CVT, then dropping the 3.5. Apparently the used car lots filled up with them, and they were cheap. Sad to watch.

It is sad to see another sedan or coupe going away. I have fond memories of the 2001 GLE I had from new to 12 years and 150k miles. My stepson did another 80k mi. on it with no love. Last year of the '98-'01 second gen before they went all Renault. '00 and '01 had some suspension and exhaust tweaks that were nice. Mine eventually got the dreaded intake manifold gasket leak at 140k from their ill-located EGR valve. Quite an intense job to replace on that car, with its reconfigured former longitudinal KA24 engine. Many private garages refused that job after the first one. Nissan never owned the design defect.

The '02 to perhaps '06 models had a bad rep, mostly from the imploding primary cats that often took out the engine. The CVT's did what they do after that. The rental fleet rep was always prevalent. On mine, some alloy wheels and leather inserts on the seats gave some feel of mattering. I actually was and very much still am, one of the great unwashed tribes.

I will say that Altima's are still seen traveling at 75 mph, passing lane only, with all 4 tires being temporary space saver spares. I've seen that at least twice.

I rent cars all the time. I am always very happy to get an Altima, as they are very, very comfortable, and get fantastic highway MPG.

I'm 100% certain the Accord is a better car, but I hate renting them. Terrible seats, low and on the floor, uncomfortable for long trips, and intrusive nanny technology. Not only that, but the Altima gets better MPG, by a lot. I can easily go 600 miles per tank at very fast highway speeds in an Altima, all while being quite comfortable.

Tell me again how Nissan is going to make a capable $25,000 EV sedan, that can go 600 miles at 90MPH on one charge? Because quite simply, it CAN'T be done. Dropping the Altima is discontinuing one of the best inexpensive and capable long distance cars around.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for the Altima . My wife had one . She got T-boned by a drunk driver and I'm convinced the airbags and structural integrity of that car saved her . It stayed in one piece and didn't crumple more than it needed to . The FD peeled the top off and ripped the passenger seat out to remove her . That was a tough little car .

I've owned two Altimas over the past 15 years and find them to be a reliable and stylish car that hits all of my buttons. With the luxury interior (SL model) they are as nice as any Mercedes or BMW I have rented and more comfortable at less than half the price. The ride is smooth and quiet with more acceleration than I need, the gas mileage exceeds 40 mpg on the highway, and the new models are really cool looking for a family sedan. Here is my current 2019 2.5 SL with AWD - paid $29,500 loaded. YMMV, but I love my ride!

Wait, was it not the Altima that came out with HID headlights that can be stolen without opening the hood? I think there was a recall for a new replacement security bolt......lol

...or was that the Maxima?

Sad to see the Altima go - one of my favorite rental cars. Comfortable, great fuel economy and even in 2.5 guise still pretty dang quick for a ho-hum 4 banger family sedan.

LOL at "Big Altima Energy" but it is 100% true. I don't think its a Nissan thing as most of the Sentra's I see around here are quite well kept and driven sanely, there is just something about the Altima that attracts the most negligent and worst driving owners. Altima and Malibu are the ones I keep my head on a swivel for.

That was the 5th generation Maxima - I remember when that was a thing and the replacement headlights were not cheap.

I’m a sedan guy, but the Altima was a CVT sedan.

Goodbye IMO.

Sedans manufactured by Toyota are still the highest selling vehicles in the United States. So I think it´s a matter of Toyota being just better. Nobody wants to compete with the Camry-Corolla cabal.

I’ve rented Altimas a few times over the years and always thought they were decent driving cars for the purchase price. I don’t mind the cvt, it’s unobtrusive and helps return fantastic fuel economy.
Long term reliability must at least be ok, older Altimas are a common sight on the road around here.
