Failing Fuel Pump ? Engine Stalls when hot

Have a 4ac 4 cylinder toyota corolla 1985 carb engine.

Engine idles and runs fine at park in the morning. After the engine runs for a bit like 10-20mins, the car stalls at any speed.

Could this be a faulty mechanical fuel pump?

Fuel Filter?

Ignition Coil.

Engine stalls without any stutter...just puff that's it.

Any opinions?

It's either air, fuel or spark. My guess is that it's related to your auto-choke mechanism. Could be you need a new carb.

I had a similar situation with an '81 Chrysler product years ago. Turned out to be the ignition module. Try this: after the car stalls pull one of the spark plug wires and attach a spare plug and lay it on the valve cover. Have someone crank the car over a few times and see if you get any spark. If not, then it's an ignition problem somewhere.

If the vehicle is old enough to have points and condensor ignition, then a bad condensor will exhibit similar symptoms.

In general I would lean toward the ignition side of the diagnosis, but a bad fuel pump would be a possible candidate also. This is easy enough to check - Look into the carb after the engine dies and see if the accelarator pump shoots a strong stream of gas when you move the throttle lever. If not, if it just drips and sputters, then it is probably a fuel pump problem.

Well the car does not start at all now, i mean engine turns over with a normal sound (therefore no timing belt break), weak spark, and think its getting gas.

Will be changing fuelpump/fuelfilter/ignition coil this weekend..and see.

Yup it was the ignition coil!!!

Got it started, then it overheated.

Went back today and got a thermostat and new radiator.

this car is 1985, and the owner replaced the radiator in 1995, when I saw the thermostat and how ugly the radiator fluid was I changed the radiator too. Might as well.
