failed converter theft attempt mistaken for bad shop work

There are plenty of sketchy places out there to get your vehicle worked on, but it's not always their fault.
Sunday evening, the daughter, of an employee called me, to ask for some advice. Her Dad works for me, and told her I'm fairly knowledgeable regarding auto mechanical. A week before, she had her oil change done at a quick lube place, and was fast to blame them. I said drove it over, and let me have a look. I could definitely hear her coming a ways away, as she said, suddenly it got very loud. I put it on the hoist, and showed her, where the exhaust pipe had been cut. I said the quick lube place had nothing to do with this, so get that out of your mind. You can see this was intentionally cut, my guess is someone was planning to steal your catalytic converter, to sell it. Either they got scared off after cutting just one side, or they realized that wasn't the cat, because it's actually a resonator. The cat is further forward, and harder to get to. She was at work, parked in the lot, and after work, upon starting her Honda it was very loud, not nice and quiet like when she parked it 8 hours earlier.
I'm not very good at welding light metal like exhaust pipes, so told her that my weld may not last, but I did my best, and welded it back together.
Plenty of places make mistakes, or are just simply crooks, but this had nothing to do with the place she had her oil change done at recently. It definitely looks like an attempted theft to me. Just wanted to share, what happened, as I found it interesting.

I suppose if it was very unusual for an auto place not to try to upsell unneeded services, then people would be more inclined to trust them? Looking back before I really took interest in fixing my cars, I'm pretty sure that at least twice I had shops just make up a problem, to pad the bill a bit, not enough for me to investigate further, but still added an hour or two labor.

Just imagine being such a lowlife that one would resort to stealing catalytic converters and not even being able to do that correctly.

I had the rear muffler on my 1990 Buick Century replaced some years ago by literally a shade tree mechanic outside Georgetown, SC. After the job was done he casually mentioned he had also removed at no additional charge that heinous catalytic converter and I would now be unincumbered and sticking it to the man with my new freedom. I knew exactly what he was up to and pointed out the car is registered in NC and unlike SC, they have car inspections and to put that back on post haste.

A shop in NY said a car at their shop for other work had its resonator stolen instead of the cat

That's outrageous.
