Factory recommends 3 month or 3k miles on my trans am, should I follow it or go with 5k or 6 month on synthetic oil? its 2002 trans am ws6 ls1 6 speed with 97k miles. I drive short trip every day around 20 miles a day, rarely get on highway for long drive.

I'm currently running Mobil 1 high miles 5w30 with Mobil 1 oil filter.

This doesn't seem right. Page 7-6 in your owner's manual is typical of GM for that era. Follow the OLM, if you exceed one year change it. If you reset the OLM accidentally change after 3k. I haven't seen a GM in the last 15 years that had a 3k OCI even under severe service.

CamaroT56,

If you go by months and not by the miles driven then 6 month OCI intervals is good. For myself you and I have the same driving habits but prefer to go by miles driven so my OCI's are pushed almost every 8-9 months just to go 3K.

hmmm page 7-5 " short trip/ City intervals " every 3,00 miles ( 5000km ) engine oil and filter change ( or 3 months, whichever occurs first )

on page 7-6 " Long trip/Highway Intervervals " every 7,500 miles ( 12 500 km ) engine oil and filter change ( or every 12 month, whichever occurs first ).

My 2000 LS1 would trip the OLM in under 3000 miles under certain circumstances:

Lots of very cold starts and warmup cycles or car running too hot due to issues,

I made up my mind , 6 month oil change would be best. I think I feel good on that. pls no more opinion cause it properly make me wanna change my oil tomorrow lol.

I think you should change your oil tomorrow, just so you have it fresh in your mind when you changed it. Then, change it every two weeks after that.

HEHE that wont work on me this time my friend ^^

Considering where oil was at in 2002 in terms of OCI's that might have been ok. But in 2011 3k on any oil seems like a waste. Anyway theres no way to be sure without doing a used oil analysis with TBN. If you do that youll have your answer.

Just me but, I would stick to 3,000 mile oil changes just because its been proven to work well in any engine application you have. Sure some engines can probably go a little longer due to the fact some aren't as hard on oil as others but, oil is so cheap that its almost a no brainer to change it every 3 to 4k. You will be much safer in the long run if you really plan to keep her for a long while.

I last changed the oil/filter in my '80 Firebird FORMULA in Sept 2010. Car had been sitting since OCT. I pulled the car out just 2 weeks ago, looked at the OCI sticker that I put on the upper corner of the windshield and I had only put on 70 miles. I'm not changing the oil yet just because it's been 10 months.

Engine started great, sounds great/strong and I have been doing this for 31 years i.e., changing the oil/filter just prior to winter storage and then running the same oil all summer, which amount to about 500-600 miles/summer.
*[Sure, when the car was first new, I change the oil real soon and often just because it was new]*.

Maybe some summers I may hit 1000 + miles but it's rare! My average miles over the last 31 years is 1285 miles/year, because I drove it more when I first bought it. Today it does more sitting.

With conventional oil follow the GM OLM or 1 year whichever comes first.

With an extended drain synthetic like Mobil 1 Extended Performance you should be able to reset the OLM and go to the 2nd time.

6 months but change to Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Get it on the Auto Zone promotions. 5 quarts and an Mobil 1 filter for $32.
