Factory fill?

I have two new cars; 2008 MDX and Mazdaspeed3. Several people have told me that there is a special factory fill oil in these cars for break-in purposes, and that I shouldn't change it out for at least 3500 miles. Normally I have changed out at about 1500 with PP full syn.

Does anyone really know the answer to this question? I figured this would be the best site to ask this.

I thought Honda used a special break-in oil, but now I am not too sure. On our Suzuki SX4, I was pretty sure there wouldn't be a special factory-fill, and was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong. It would be great to see an analysis of your factory-fills.

Special oil or not, I would change it at around 1,000 miles or so. I would follow up with a shorter than the manufacturer recommended OCI, and use a conv/synthetic blend with moly.

As best as we can tell the Mazda FF may be Valv mineral. Not terribly special. Get it out in the first 1K.

My brother just bought a new 2008 Honda Accord coupe. Dealership told him to follow the oil life monitor until it reaches 15 to 20%.

I am trying to convince him to get an oil change earlier but he won't listen. He has 340 miles on the car, and at this rate, he probably won't change it until at least 5,000 miles. I just cringe at the thought of all the metal that will be grinding around.

Honda uses a special break in oil and they want it left in for about 5k. .02.

People love to claim "special factory break-in oil", looking the used oil analysis it just looks like (moly) assembly lube to me.

I wish someone could get a NEW, UNUSED, hopefully still bottled sample of this magical elixir and run a VOA...
A sample of the assmebly lube would be nice too.
And a bottle of whatever oil the dealers in Japan sell...

i would run it to 1K at least and then dump it and put in PP or whatever else you may like

All the new cars my dad ever bought,the oil was never changed until 3,000 miles.All of his cars never used oil.I guess its to each his own.In my case iam an oil change nut,so all mine got the oil changed about 500 miles.

Wait 5000 miles to change out the FF and you will be golden including your oil. *no pun intended*

I think the engines are built to much tighter tolerances these days. Honda,the world's largest builder of engines of all types and applications,probably knows what they are doing.

I would like to add that Honda probably recomends not changing the factory fill not due to special additives but because as an administrative policy the oil change is not required, multiplied across all new cars sold annually we can see a massive amount of resources saved and disposle issues abaited.
Would someone throw away the first steak they cooked on a grill without tasting it becasue the grill was brand new? Do you flush your toilet before and after you use it? Do you change the factory air in your tires?

Interesting. Check out my post on SuperTech oil with my 2008 Fit. I just changed the oil today and sent the sample off. I saw another
A Fit users UOA on the factory fill had a BIG additive package. IMHO The
moly was 650
Calcium was 2050,
Phos 700 and
Zinc 850 All pretty high.

We'll see what mine looks like soon.

Best I could tell Honda says run the factory fill to 15% and I have read all the books that came with the car. I was at 40% today and 4750 and refused to go over 5k miles, so did the deed today. All of this is so far from what I consider normal. My stupid though was get it out at 1 or 2k but did not.

I agree would nice nice to see a VOA. Anyone in Japan? Go on over to the factory in SUZUKA,MIE Japan and grab some off the line. lol

Although todays oils and engines are superior to those of yesteryear, I have a problem leaving in the factory fill for full interval for the following reasons...to begin with, the factory fill has been in the car since assembly, which could be months !!...Also you really dont know whats in there...I did an oil change on my /'07 Sonata 2.4, @ 1000 miles and was shocked to see such dirty, waterlike oil come out !!!...I feltmuch better changing it out and putting in 5/20 Pennzoil yellow...Finally, @ 1000 miles or so, you are getting out any shavings which DON'T belong in the crankcase..anyone out there with a 2.4 Sonata using syn??...

Great point about the vehicles sitting. My new car was built 7 months prior to me purchasing it and had 3 miles on the odometer. I changed it out after 500, then 1500, then 2500 on the way to a 5k oci ultimately. I shudder at the thought of leaving in 7 month old oil on a car that was only driven 3 miles.
