even a viscometer or something that is able to detect, at least, when the oil is too solid to pump .. either by temperature, grade or oxidation!
 
When I took the engine apart in my first car (Olds 350), it looked A LOT worse than that. I had to grab the pushrods with vice grips and drive them out with hammer (I was 17- cut me some slack here). When I pulled the intake off, the lifter 'valley' was filled with a solid, crusty mass. My Pa blamed Penzoil.
 
so what happened to that engine. Are you cleaning off manually now. Back when I stationed in Philipine, I saw a lot of kids cleaning out engine parts with WD40, some strong solvent, and brushes of various sizes, and a paint scrappers. Cheap labor is the way to go I tell ya.
