If it is then just clink on the "watch on youtube"

I just clicked on the video box and it played. Closed the window and tried again and got what you got..

Cool footage. Having the skill to take off and successfully land the F18 on a carrier is a most impressive one imo. One of my favorite movies is Behind Enemy Lines and scenes of the F18 are also pretty good. GhostRider requesting a flyby, negative GhostRider the pattern is full.

The Hornet is a delight to fly; light, responsive controls, excellent stability, great power response. The Tomcat, on the other hand, was demanding; bigger wingspan, much higher landing weight, poor directional stability and poor power response. Digital flight control upgrades in the 90s mitigated some, but not all, of those challenges...

Astro14 , you flew both the Hornet and Tomcat ? Just wondering because Canada is in the works to replace our aging CF-18's and some say the F-18 Hornet has been called the Super slow Hornet and it's a dog .
Your opinion ?

I flew the F-14 (A and B) and the F/A-18 C... Never flew the Super Hornet (E and F model)...so I have no first hand experience with the jet.

But here's the real question: what missions do you want the airplane to perform? If it's long range high speed intercept of invading bombers, there are better choices (the F-15 would be my pick... and the Avro Arrow was designed precisely for that mission back in the late 50s).

If you want a reliable, effective multi-mission airplane, the USN has had great success doing close air support and interdiction in combat over the last 11 years with the Super Hornet.

It has some performance parameters that are lower than older airplanes, like top speed, but in lots of ways, most in fact, it's superior. More flexible, reliable, better handling, more ordnance capacity, more endurance. It's a good all around jet.

Given Canada's budget and deployment record the super hornet is a good choice. I wouldn't go with JSF for example, Canada wouldn't be likely to need the stealth and the airplane costs nearly twice as much..,

The performance of the upgraded, phased array radar in the Super is awesome...but this discussion would go classified quickly...

Thanks for the reply . Funny you mention the Arrow , but as you know that project ended badly and to many Canadians is a black mark on our history....certainly something that should have been but didn't due to some poor political decisions or other powers....we'll never know on that one .

As you know we have a huge border to patrol and the northern regions need to be protected from other countries . It's not unusual for us to have to chase you know who away from those areas so definately long range is important plus a reliable airplane as you are a long way from help if you have a failure .
The F-15 has been mentioned in a discussion we are having but of interest Saab has apparently offered to sell us the new generation Gripen and might allow us to build it right here under contract .
Lots of things to consider but it is certainly a great buy price wise compared to some others out there . The F-35 ?....as you know we originally signed on for that one but Lockheed Martin is way behind schedule and the costs are rising plus they can't seem to work out the bugs , heck they have delayed sales of the F-22 to Japan due to some technical issues . Also the fact we have now found out some of our C-130's purchased from them have Chinese knock-off electronics in them doesn't make one feel too warm and fuzzy about their aircraft .

Without regard to $$, the F-22 would be best for those Northern regions: super cruise, exceptional range, lots of weapons, but it's pricey...and Canada has been deploying forces in support of NATO operations, usually a permissive environment, usually air to ground support missions, so the non stealthy F/A-18 with good payload, good endurance and good sortie reliability is an ideal platform for that while still being a credible air superiority platform...

I'm sure the F/A-18 is one will will be looking at and would be a fair upgrade from our current legacy CF-18's which do have some things in common so likely an easy fit for our pilots to upgrade to as well .

How did you find the Tomcat compared to the F/A-18 to handle ? I read one artical that they were a brute to fly . Of course the Top Gun movie made them somewhat popular

Whoops , sorry , I see you already touched on that .

Touched on it a bit more in the "favorite airplane" thread.

I am a Tomcat guy. Loved that jet. But it took a pilot to fly it and a good one to fly it well..,

Adam - that's a tough one...I loved the Tomcat - like a '68 L88 Vette...the Hornet was more like a new Boxster...

The Tomcat would do things that the Hornet could only dream of (speed, acceleration, altitude)...but the Hornet was easy to fly, easy to fly slow (fight) and it always left the line with full, working systems...

They're both great airplanes...but if I could fly just one more flight, it would be the Tomcat with big motors (F-14B/D)...the rocketship...

I hear ya, and my stepdads friend that flew the F-14, said hands down, the F-14, as he said it was rugged, heavy, able to withstand a lot and just darn solid aircraft. Yeah, I was born too late to see the F-14 at any airshows or in action
