external usb drive?

Clearly my lack of knowledge is impacting my request. I'll explain as simply as I can. I need a device that I insert a CD into and it downloads/transfers the info on that CD into the computer. I thought that was referred to as an external USB (optical) drive but can also mean or misconstrued as an SSD external storage device . I have ample storage with 500 gb of internal storage and an external 1tb SSD device. Sorry for being (basically) computer illiterate.
As others have said, what you need is an external CD drive. They are dirt cheap.

This doesn't make sense, really.

Nope - OP said one of the things they needed this for was for "some photos I want to sort and maybe edit" too.
Maybe he wants a floppy drive to computer device?????????? :cautious:

I appreciate everyone's patience for my rather confusing explanation of what I need. An external CD drive recommended by doitmyself and others is what I need. I'll be heading over to Best Buy tomorrow to look at the Dell, Asus and LG options they have. Any of those look like they will do the job for about 30 bucks. With regards to the photo confusion, I transferred photos to CD's from an older laptop (that had an internal CD drive) before it died on me. Admittedly not the most efficient way to do it but it was within the limited range of my technical experience at the time. Those photos are from many memorable trips. I now have the time to organize them and eventually learn how to edit some as well.

These used to go on sale at BB for $20 not that long ago.

Be wary of the randomly branded cheap disc drives on Amazon. Reviews from people who have torn them open show that they're old drives, maybe pulls of some kind.

Those SanDisk Extreme SSDs were subject to a couple class action suits a few years ago.

Everyone has their duds, but…nope.

Including Samsung, though the RMA process on a couple of their thumb drives was very smooth, and replacements were sent readily.

If you're burning to CD/DVD, I'd go with LG or Asus.
The drive is one thing. But the important part is the media quality.
Higher quality blank media can help avoid disc rot.
For long term storage (with no power connected), it's hard to beat good quality spinning platters drives.
