My 98 explorer manual states to use Mercon atf for power steering. Fine. However is Mercon V the newest version? Are there any other suitable choices?

I have used with great luck:
1. Mobil 1 synthetic ATF
2. AMSOIL synthetic ATF

Both have done a great job of eliminating the typical Ford PS system whine.

Thanks everyone. I have just decided to replace my fluid after 147,000 or so miles. The fluid is brownish. just wanted to be sure what to use. Ihave done it on my BMW a couple of times -no issues. BTW, no ps noise on the explorer.

Yep, Mercon or Mercon V is perfectly fine.

The manual for my truck states Mercon in the PS and Mercon V in the transmission, but I have been using V in the PS with no issues for over four years now.

Just did PS fluid on a 2005 Focus, manual called for older version of Mercon and said specifically NOT to use Mercon V. But I really don't know one way or the other, a quick Google search seems to give the consensus of 'yes it's fine'.

BTW this was the worst PS fluid I've ever seen (only 80k miles), looked like Hershey's syrup and took about 5 drain and fills of the reservoir (an entire qt) to get it sort of reddish in color again. Might have to run another qt through pretty soon.

MerconV was 'prohibited' in Mercon applications in transmissions and PS systems.
But magically, it was later OK'd - it was/is just fine.

It always was OK.

Ford actually sells a P/S fluid for vehicles spec'd for Mercon, we never stocked it and always used Mercon V with no issues whatsoever. We now have to stock it because apparently it is one of the top 300 part numbers sold in our region.

Not surprising, Ford PS systems tend to really beat up the fluid when they don't have a cooler.
