Explorer oil specs

Can the standard 290 HP V6 on the new generation Explorers take 5w30 oil? I saw the oil cap says 5W-20, but know a lot of times it is listed in the manual that other weights are acceptable (or acceptable if it is synthetic, which I'd use synthetic). Is there a certain standard (SN, or a Ford specific one like GM's Dexos 1) that the oil needs to meet?

What does the manual say? If it only allows for 5w20 then thats what I would use to preserve my warranty. Even if you are out of warranty and it specs 5w20, thats what I would use.

Fords since the early 2000s have used 5w20...them and Honda started it all.Others have followed as well.Delivery Rangers with 2.3 Mazdas have gone nearly 300K running 5w20 with no problem,no need for 5w30 in my mind.

I'm thinking about a prospective vehicle. I have about 25 quarts of 5w30 Synpower and no 5W-20. We're going to get an Explorer in a few months and the oil cap says 5W-20, but it also says that in our Elantra but the manual says 5w30 is acceptable as well. I don't have an Explorer manual available so I'm wondering if those that have that vehicle would know if 5w30 is acceptable.

My Jeep JK calls for 5W20 and nothing else. I'm running 5W30 in it right now and it purrs like a kitten. I've read (on Jeep forums) that my JK, outside the US, is spec'd for 5W30. ??????????

Just pulled the manual from my wife's 2013. The only oil spec'd for the 3.5L V6 is 5W-20. The 3.5L turbo specs 5w30.

Just use the 5w30. You'll never know the difference.

thanks. I guess I'll have to try to convince the wife to get the Sport with the turbo so I don't waste my stash of oil.

I have 34 quarts left still of Synpower 5w30.

^Yes! This is the one I would buy. I wouldn't use the 5w30 in the N/A 3.5.
