Hey guys, I was wondering what you guys thought was a reasonable price for a pair of sunglasses. I had a small argument last night over what a good price is because I wear a rather expensive pair. I have a pair of Oakleys that were $150, and so many people seem to think that it was too much. Do you think its worth it for apair of quality glasses? TIA!

I just buy $20 or under because I usually break mine. If your Oakleys make you happy then keep buying them. I wouldnt because they would get scratched or broken.

I've paid up to $200 for sunglasses. I find the $15-$20 a pair cheapo sets fall apart, bend easily, or are just garbage in the first place. I don't lose or break sunglasses, so the high end purchases pay off. They tend to last over ten years, rather than my annual replacement of the cheapies.

I get the $15-20 sport/safety shooting glasses and they last years. When I loose them or they break (its a lost thing that happens more...) then I pull out another set.

I've got 3 pairs in storage.

I drop mine at least one twice a day. The nice thing about the safety is they are hard enough that they are hard to scratch.

Yes. I worked at Sunglass Hut for about 3 years when I was in high school. There is absolutely a difference in cheap versus expensive ones, though I will agree there are some brands that are marked WAY up. If you guys want to know more, I'd be happy to post.

For anyone worried about breaking expensive ones, it's like anything else: if you own an expensive pair, you will definitely learn to be more careful with them.

Sure, if your SUPER RESPONSIBLE and not absent minded one bit. Once you have an expensive pair of sunglasses--I have a pair of DKNY that set me back $200.00 skins. The feel and clarity is superior!! But, have known people who paid big money for sunglasses only to sit them down somewhere in public for a matter of minutes to see them disappear! Even taking them off in a public bathroom and sitting them on a sink when crowded to wash your hands & they can be gone in a flash!!

"Worth it" is always relative.

Some don't know or appreciate the difference.

Some know the difference but can't justify the incremental price increase.

Some really want something and are willing to sacrifice in other areas to afford it.

You want ones that cover a wide spectrum UV wise and should be marked so. Polarized by itself is no good. Needs to be in combo with wide UV coverage. And the glass area needs to cover the majority of your general eye area.

I get some name brand for $30 or $40 in the vision center in a Walmart. (I like Police).

I also have some sun and combo reading glasses since I need reading glasses to read a book.

Oakleys all day long. Yes I know that they are vastly overpriced. But, you can take them apart and clean every little bit of them and they last forever. I bought my last pair three or four years ago for $120. If I swapped them every year for cheap $20-30 pairs it would be a wash by now.

If you're an individual who loses them often or switches with the "in" crowed then I obviously wouldn't advocate for pricey shades.

Best fitting glasses i've owned. Mine cost more for prescription lenses.

you can actually get a pretty decent pair of polarized sunglasses for about $30-$40.

I get bad headaches in bright light situations. I'll often wear polarized sunglasses in conditions that others do not. It's not to be "cool". It's just too bright for me. But I do have exceptionally good night vision.

Of all the genetic traits my kid inherited from his mom, it appears that he only inherited my light sensitivity. On an overcast day, the third base coach walked over to my kid and told him to take the sunglasses off. Couldn't get his bat on all of the pitch. Short pop-up to shortstop. Put them back on at the next at bat and crushed the ball to deep left-center field. They are Rawlings youth glasses. They look blue but have an amber tint lens that seems to help contrast and depth perception

I've had Oakleys before. Lenses are scratched and one of the earpieces is messed up from putting them on with my motorcycle helmet on. I keep telling myself that I'm going to mail them in to Oakley for repair or replacement but I'm positive they will send me a letter back saying that this particular model has been obsolete for 5 years or something.

I like the Oakleys the wife got me for Christmas 3 years ago. They fit well, don't fly off my face if I use them for running or snowboarding, and can be worn for hours on end without discomfort. I make sure to take care of them, and put them into a carry bag or carry case when they're not in use.

PROTECT YOUR EYES-

UVA-UVB rays are harmful and I would imagine not all cheapies are actually protecting you.

Buy a decent pair- Ray-Ban, Oakley, Smith optics -all reputable and can be found on sale $70-100

I sometimes buy moderately expensive sunglasses at Big 5 when they're on sale - Bolle, New Balance, Maui - but then I lose or break them. Then I end up wearing $6 safety glasses with dark lenses. I do need to get a pair of prescription sunglasses, though.

I tend to buy $20 because I tend to trash them. If I'm on the beach or out in the boat, whatever, I don't need to worry about expensive sunglasses. Life's too short.

Also, it bothers me, What makes a $200 pair of Sunglasses 10 times 'better' than a $20 pair?
Am I paying for a name? Marketing?
I don't mind paying if the extra $ reflects real value.

My Maui Jims are still kicking 7 years later. I did have one of the lenses replaced due to saving my eye from a bungee cord slipping out of my hand and the hook would of taken my eye out. I paid 225.00. I would do it again, awesome sun glasses

No. Expensive sunglasses acre pretty much a huge trend where I live (rains a lot...go figure). Most folks here where them as a fashion or status statement. The more expensive....the more attention they get. I see them as a pain in the rear to keep track of anyway. 99% of the time I have no use for them. I prefer to see things as they are mostly....unless it's while driving into the sun with all that serious glare. I even hiked in Arizona and prefer not wearing them.
