So he ha a record of being cruel to animals. His wife considers the animals to be like family, yet they keep them for quite a while...she stays with him and the animals accumulation more...until his "cruelty" surfaces where he lets some free....after which he kills himself.

2+2= ??

Sounds like all the cruelty in this story is done by the law enforcement.

I can't remember the last time I heard of exotic animal collectors being cruel to them. What is the point? Spend $$ to get the animals and then be mean to them and love them like family at the same time??

Cruelty to the animals, but in the same article it mentioned that the proper facility to house the animals was in question...perhaps cruel from a viewpoint that they weren't in a Zoo of some kind?

Its sad and disgusting they would shoot and kill without trying to capture these animals.

...way to carry out vengeance..."I'll release a bunch of exotic animals after me and my wife care for them for long enough to be considered family...and then I'll kill myself....that will show them!"

I agree... however, you SERIOUSLY do not want to allow predators like Bengal Tigers free reign in an urban/suburban area. There's a reason there is a very low human population density in their natural habitat.

The first few posts on this were all blaming the 'crazy violent treehuggers' I wanted to say something so bad but I bit my tongue. As we now see, the evidence is in and it's just too bad you can't blame people who are animal lovers. To add insult to injury they kill all the animals. Really a sad story.

I'm betting they did, but think about it: how on earth can you capture these things? This is Ohio, not Washington. I imagine they really don't have a forest service with both the knowledge and the equipment to capture or tranquilize these animals. And with these animals roaming pubic streets, time is pretty much of the essence. It's a tragedy indeed.

The whole thing is nutty to me. I spend a lot of time out in the backcountry and my entire goal is to NOT see any of these things! The whole appeal of seeing a cougar or bear is pretty much gone once you actually run into one on the trail. Having them on your property by choice? Weird...

But when you read the last paragraphs of the news story I linked in the other thread it did make you wonder if this farm might be a target of activists. Maybe the farm owner was taking heat from the local police too. Frankly I think the farm owner, the local police and possibly animal activists are all lousy lol.

really? seems like you're reading into it what you want to believe. It sounds to me like the police were reacting to neighbor complaints. Guess what? If the guy had those animals on his property and they were getting loose (as alleged by the neighbors), I'd be complaining, too!

Ohio is not very rural but Eastern Ohio is probably the most rural and natural part of Ohio. There are wild exotic animal sanctuaries in that area ran by the Columbus Zoo. Supposedly Columbus zoo personale were on the scene and were wanting to tranquilize some of the animals. And like most states Ohio as a decent Natural resources dept. My guess is the local police went on an agressive shooting spree, not saying it was totally wrong.

That's just part of the story. I never said the owner wasn't in the wrong or out there. But once the police get their teeth into you, they don't let up. I'm talking about the previous mysterious death of the farm worker and the fact that the farm owner did prison time and that the police even said they were watching the owner. Of course I'm reading into it because not all the facts are available and probably never will be. I imagine just owning lots of guns and exotic animals could cause you grief even if you never actually caused any problems. People in Ohio like to meddle in others affairs, more than some places I've been. Just saying.

you're probably right, though I imagine that we'll end up finding out a lot more of the story simply because this is a pretty fascinating story!

I think it's really odd to most people because I think most states and/or municipalities don't even allow you to own these things. Until this came out, I didn't even know it was legal for anyone in the US to own a Bengal tiger. So, the whole thing is a real oddity. Heck, I think I'm over the legal limit for chickens! Guess one of them is gonna get re-named "fryer"...

What I'm sad about is the killing of all the endangered animals.
I guess tranquilizing them would have been too much of a bother from the Sheriff's perpective; an attitude I have a problem with. But of course I don't have all the facts.

I am glad to hear a wolf and a monkey (how dangerous is a monkey?) are still at large.

There is rumor that the police showed up, see all the animals, start shooting,THEN find the owner shot to death. So maybe killed by police? Not so sure on this one, but it's floating around the 'net.

As the WWII memorial for war animals reads:

"They had no choice"

Its funny how humans think: Its our world, everything else just lives in it.

I doubt that though. I figure the police would make up a story that the owner was "threatening" if that had happened. I don't know how they would cover that one up. I guess anything is possible.
