This isnt a lot of info to go off of, but would my guess be the "common" issue???

98 Chevy S10 ZR2 4x4, 4.3L V6, owned since new.

Between 1000-2000 RPM, light loads, I get a metal on metal rattling sound at specific speeds only (resonances I guess).

At cold startup this does not happen, it gets worse as the vehicle warms up.

Kicking the tailpipe seems to give some of the same metallic character.

For 14 years old, the exhaust system looks like new. My thought is that it is rubber hangars that stretch and then soften as it gets warm. Is this sensible?

I do have a slight intermittent shudder of the engine when it is warm, but I think this is because it is a 90deg V6. It pulls strong, never any CEL, etc. I have tried looking for engine movement to see if a mount could be the culprit, but I never get any real motion of the engine.

But my #2 thought was that it could be a flaky mount that softens as it gets warm (I read that S10 mounts are terrible), causing something to move where it shouldnt at some speed.

Its just cold and wet, so going under to randomly look at stuff (especially since there has to be some load - spinning the engine to the same RPM in neutral doesnt make the noise), when the truck has to be powerbraked to get the noise to come up isnt my idea of a good time. Would rather have a good idea of the right suspects and track them specifically.

Thanks!

exhaust heat shield or catco loosening up inside. If your mounts are soft the exhaust might be hitting a crossmember or something.

I had a 1998 4.3L K1500 4x4 that had the same type of rattle. On the second dealer visit for it, they replaced the whole (cat back) exhaust. It was still under the 3yr/36Kmi warranty though. That particular system had a huge cylindrical shaped muffler. I guess it was something loose inside the original muffler making the rattle.

you might want to check this also, here is a good place to look

Nothing like that, but thanks for the link. No CELs or other such indications, but will look into it...

Thanks!

My father's toyota had a head shield get rattly on it. His couldnt be welded, but not sure why. I think the corolla had some funny metal exhaust (black metal OEM).

I think my truck is all stainless (it is original OEM, not rusty in any way), not sure if that is easily weldable...

When I hear a rattle in an exhaust the verey first thigs I do are climb underneath and bang on the cat, then mess with the heat shield. 9 times out of 10 it's one of those 2 things.

So FINALLY I got under m truck to investigate. Ive been a bit behind lately.

The center muffler (not the converter) has a heat shield on it. That heat shield is held on with two stainless bands.

One is gone.

This is a muffler that is flat-oval shaped and about a foot in width.

So how do I repair?

I was thinking of finding as long of hose clamps as I could, and then screwing them one to the next until I have a length that is sufficient to go around... Then clamp it tight and call it a day.

All I need is a stainless strap that I can close tight.

Recommendations?

Thanks!

Look at Lowes for huge hose clamps. They have them for dryer vents, 6" rubber/ PVC pipe couplings, etc. The world is your oyster.

A really long stainless hose-clamp is the way to go. Check the plumbing-supply area of your closest hardware store.

You can also gang-together two or more smaller clamps to get the circumference you need.

Diameter, or circumference?

I'm guessing you mean circumference.
12" diameter would be almost 38" circumference.
12" circumference would be about 3.75" diameter.

Diameter. The muffler is about a foot wide on its flat sides, and is ovoid.

So I'm going to need that much length... Or string multiple together. I'm ok with connecting a few, but don't want to have to connect too many...

Get this strapping stuff and an appropriate 1/4" nut/bolt/washers/lock washers.

Actually I stopped at Napa and they had a super-long hose clamp which I just installed.

$3.39.

I saw that strapping at autozone. It was made in USA, but it didnt say if it was stainless.

The Napa hose clamp was Mexican made - DRAT! Also dont know if it was stainless, and will see if I find a better solution with a stainless part. But it holds in the meantime!

You don't want that strapping.

If it's not stainless, it will rust like crazy.
Even if it is, you won't be able to tighten it down like you can with a worm-driven hose clamp.

Oh, that's different. I was imagining an exhaust pipe heat-shield, which would be closer to 12" circumference.
