Excellent Gas Mileage

I agree chevron is great. But there gas doesn't smell so great. not that i go around sniffing gas i also like Amco/BP premium- when i pump there premium, I know what im getting because the premium is a diffrent color than the other grades. And- they gurantee better gas mileage with continous use of their premium.And there gas smells great. my car is chipped so I can tell the quality of premium gas rather well. As far as shell V power goes- i actually have a feeling that it may be 94 octane

I am sure that you already know that the 10% ethanal blend that is mandated for many areas (including mine) has a lower energy content (BTU) per gallon than "pure" gasoline.
I always am taken back at the smell of the non-ethanol fuel when I am on a trip. I am not intending this statement as a bash on the 10% Ethnanol fuel that we use....just a statement of fact....that the potential fuel economy is lower with it.......all other factors equal.
Traveling west to east is also usually better as the normal wind direction is some factor of west to east.....so the wind resistance is usually less when you drive east, versus west.
Add that to a well maintained vehicle......can't get much better than that....

Actually I don't know that about gas and ethanol. All I know is that the best gases seem to be Shell, Texaco, and Chevron fuels.

There was no wind on the drive there or back.

I know this site is "BOBISTHEOILGUY" not "BOBISTHEGASGUY" but one poster mentioned that Chevron and Texaco are identical fuels? Is this true? We have no Chevron stations here in the Northeast but there are some Texaco's. Does Texaco have the "Techron" additive?

Not all Texaco stations sell fuel with Techron. The ones that do will advertise "with Techron".

I also have a '98 GT with an automatic. But I'm getting 260 to 280 miles per tank in mixed driving. I hate it. Anyway, later today I'm going to put in some new O2 sensors. If that does anything, I'll post the results. If it doesn't, I'm probably going to get a Jetta......

I took this photo below to show my Dad bumper to bumper traffic coming into Baker California but look at the Trip meter and how much of the gas tank I have used.



This was in a Corolla with 2 adults (I weigh too much

) and 3 kids (14yd,13 and 6).

MPG on this tank was 43.8 on reg unleaded. AC on every second...

My truck does the same on the gas guage (300-330 on half a tank... (but takes 26 gallons on fillup..)

both my truck and car the gas guages go down quicker the 2nd half but still, I like the overall MPG!

Not too bad for a lower cost simple little import!

Marathon uses Techron as their additive package, but more importantly, recently upgraded their additive package to meet STP fuel economy and engine cleaning abilities! So the first part of your statement is correct, Marathon gas is good stuff. In fact, It's GREAT stuff.
As far as dedicated hoses are concerned, they are going away, blending pumps becoming more common to reduce maintenance and costs of new pumps. The difference is negligeble in an automotive sized fillup...10 gallons or more, but motorcycle rider (2-3 gal.) should pay close attention.

Most gasoline sold these days is identical in all aspects EXCEPT for the additive package. I sell 6 brands of gasoline from my wholesale terminal, Exxon, Marathon, Speedway, BP, Citgo, and Chevron/Texaco, and a few others that are minor players. All of the base gasoline is identical, and we take the utmost care to ensure the cleanliness, octane, distillation, and additive packages meet the sellers specifications.
In various parts of the country, ethanol is currently mandated by state government. UNFORTUNATELY, ethanol now cost MORE than gasoline/gallon, so YOU don't get the savings...just the chaff. Take a look at Archer Daniels Midland, 2nd quarter profits if you think this is not true. Ethanol is now about $5.00/gallon NOT taking into consideration the $.50/gal. goernment subsidy....taken out of taxes we all pay. What a great deal.
The major differences come in with the additives, the care taken to ensure cleanliness, and the quality of the base product... and I choose Marathon/Speedway EVERY time!

Holy smokes Bill....I don't use my A/C (97 today) and I thought I was doing well at JUST under half a tank at 250 miles....the best I have ever done is 37.09 mpg I guess automatic and the heavier Matrix takes it's toll on the mpg..rated at 34 so I guess I shouldn't complain

Man, haveing a new cabin air filter and keeping it clean, is giving me a lot more MPG. So far it working just fine. For the most part, it's been Valero/Exxon with some Murphy and Citgo mixed in. I think I need to replace the drier sheet I used today with a new one.

Mine is rated for 41 mpg so +3 like you is 44mpg!

I think we both are doing good!

And as you can see in the photo, the outside temp was a little over 100 degrees and there was some traffic (tons) around 3000 ft elevation(I think?).

I had another photo I took with 430 miles on it and just coming up to the 1/4 tank mark, about a needle width away.

Interesting that I take photos with my cluster in them?

Update: I just installed new O2 sensors (the front ones...) in my '98 Mustang GT convertible. Immediately my idle is much smoother, slower, and more composed. When I start it up in the morning, it used to rev the engine rather dramatically for a few seconds... now it doesn't do that anymore.

The original sensors had 83K miles on them. There were no check engine lights... I just suspected that maybe the sensors were old.

So, this morning I filled up and it will be a week or two before I have new mileage numbers...
