Hand tighten till the gasket contacts the filter mounting plate then snug it up about half a turn, using filter wrench because my hand is oily and can't get a good grip on the filter. Oil the gasket very well and install the filter when the engine has cooled so as to decrease the chance of the gasket becoming stuck and making it hard to remove the filter next time.

i use the rubber surgical gloves when I change the oil. When i unscrew the drain bolt (no more since I installed the Fumoto valve) and when I unscrew the filter.
Hands arent oily when putting on new filter cause i take off the oily glove, tighten the filter hand tight, most of the time will use filter wrench to tighten 1/4-1/2 turn but sometimes i dont.

No magic there, it's called pre-filling. I always do it, and bet well over three fourths of the guys do here also. Last step before oiling the gasket and puting on the filter!

No magic there, it's called pre-filling. I always do it, and bet well over three fourths of the guys do here also. Last step before oiling the gasket and puting on the filter!

Read the instructions on the oil filter box. Mark filter with a masking tape vertically to tell how far you have rotated the filter. Tighten the filter till it contacts base. Use a filter wrench to tighten while watching your masking tape mark. When it has gone to 3/4 turn you are OK.
Advantages:
1. You are not fighting the filter from an awkward position. You are tight and no more.
Also, filters are very forgiving, my car got a dealer oil change due to gasket replacement. They tighten the filter so much that the filter got totally smashed. Almost appears that they wanted a DIY to fail and bring the car to them. I thought I will share.

I take a piece of sandpaper in my hand, and use it to grip the filter, to get it good and hand tight.
Now that I have all ecotech motors at home, I don't use spin-on's anymore.
