Believe it or not, small airplane shops will use a torque wrench on the oil filter. The filters have a nut on the end like a K&N. After they're torqued to spec, they're also safety wired in place so they can't come loose.

The filter housing on a Mazda 6i / 3S / Mazdaspeed 3 & 6 have torque specs of 265 in/lbs. Due to the nature of this beast, I follow that to the letter. But...tradtional filters I just hand tighten and then wrench an additional 1/4 turn. Any tighter and they can be a biotch to get off.
The last time I took a car (2000 Sentra) to a Jiffy Lube, he hand-tightened the filter and it leaked oil directly onto the exaust pipe, making for an embarassing cloud of smoke at stoplights. IMO, they need to be a little tighter than hand tight....or the techs need to have stronger wrists.

No, its either 5-20 or 5-30 depending on the engine model.
