I thought it was interesting how what’s new is sometimes very old. Almost 180 years ago there was an EV made with two direct drive motors, running from batteries, in 1841. Some of these machines were beasts like the GE ES-2 from 1919. For heat to passengers on that one they had a separate steam boiler.

 
WWII Submarines worked the same way.

I remember some diesel electric ships in the Coast Guard way back when. The current trend for new ships now are electric motor Azipod propulsion run by diesel generators or turbine generators.
