Everything that needs to be said about oil,already

I'm always a bit surprised how much more traffic (often 220+ viewers) the main oil forum gets than sub-forums like "Automotive" and "Maintenance" (they get decent traffic too but only a fraction.) It would seem that the range of topics that can be covered in those forums would be infinitely greater, thus generating more traffic.

Well, this is an oil forum after all right?

BUT.

Haven't folks fleshed it all out over the years already?

A near consensus of sorts has been reached regarding engine oil:

1. almost all oil is good. I can't think of a time when a user advises another user to NOT use a particular oil.

2. Conventional oil is as good as synthetic is ALMOST all applications.

It seems that the gap between the best oil and only average (is there a "worst" oil? not really. again #1, almost all oil is good oil.)

Someone just saw MMO on sale at Walmart by the gallon and wants to know if they can add the whole gallon as part of an oil change.

I hardly ever visit the oil section anymore. I mostly use the Auto General topics, Mechanical/Maintenance, Gen/Off-Topic, and Vehicles forums.
Everything I need to know about oil: as you said, there's no such thing as "bad" oil (except for City Star and similar garbage) so pick whatever brand you want. Use a viscosity and type of oil speced for your engine and change it at manufacturer recommended intervals. If you feel those intervals are too long, go with a more conservative interval. If you want to extend intervals, get some used oil analysis and go from there. I also understand what the viscosity numbers mean. That's about all I need to know, and all I really care to learn anymore.

I agree with you but sometimes an interesting thread does come up. I have been spending more time in the other sub-forums myself. The humor forum is pretty entertaining!

lizpat, no offense, but it strikes me funny that you would join a motor oil discussion board and conclude right away that there's nothing left to discuss! To be fair, I think there is general agreement that if a person follows the manufacturer's recommendations re: oil type and OCI, things will be OK.

Nonetheless, there are differences in motor oils, and there are people who wish to discuss them. I think it's interesting, whether it has any bearing on my daily life or not.

Yes.

The WHOLE reason I joined this board is for the tech discussion, and ferreting out the "latest and greatest" in (VERY) HIGH PERFORMANCE automotive lubrication.

I, personally, do NOT need a site to just tell me to "follow the mfg.'s recommendations", "ANY oil will work just fine", or to alert me to the best bargains/cheapest products I could possibly use.

The volume on here may draw you to that conclusion. More people, more opinions, "everything is good". If you find a forum with 10 subscribers, there could be unanimous opinions that anything named Lucas or Seafoam is the best.

If your on here enough you know who to listen to. Disregard this, because I am not one of them.
