It's in direct oppositon to the Atkins diet. I found the book in the library. Seems that Okinawans outlive even the Japanese, who outlive everyone else(if they don't commit suicide first).
They eat a lot of carbs, but not the refined types. Fish, some meat, etc. other factors seem to be their outlook on life too.
The data I saw showed that those on high-protein, low-carb diets lose a lot of weight, but much of it is water and protein, while this 'diet' allows you to lose much less protein and water, and burn fat instead.
Interesting is domething my wife had told me. Try to get 5 colors on your plate. Red, green, yellow, white, and brown(or black). I guess thast would tend to balance your foods.

So eating lucky charms for every meal IS good for you.

Yeah, but also look at their location. Their longevity can also be contributed by the environment. Okinawa is a lot healthier place to live, pollution wise, than Japan.

I think there is something in the waters in Okinawa which they feed on makes them healthy. It's in the reef I think?!?!

Okinawans are hard workers and the water is clean compared to Japan and I believe it does have something to do with the Coral as water is filtered well. They eat a lot of different vegatables, seaweed, and fish.

Who knows? The water may have an effect, but I think its their diet and activity, and outlook. And though Japan is pretty dirty in places(or so I hear; I never saw any hint that it was as dirty as lA or New York, or anywhere over here) the mainland Japanese live longer than anyone else except the Okinawans...until they start eating like we do.

I agree with Pablo.

It's balance.

But I'd temper that with the vast majority of the food that we consume should be as minimally processed as possible.

A guy I worked with for a long time was a director of "Zig Zag Railways", who had helped to recreate one of the great engineering feats of the 19th century...steam trains and a zig-zag mountain descent...told me about a group of Japanese tourists were on the train when he pulled a Yabbie (fresh water crayfish) from the strainer on the tender.

He handed it around.

The Japanese went into a huddle.

When he went to collect the yabbie it was no more.
