EV braking and brake lights

This thing about one pedal ev driving using regeneration to stop a car makes me wonder about the car behind. If the brake lights aren't on and you are stopping, isn't it like having your brake lights out?

I THINK they come on when it's regen'ing, at least I believe that's what my Audi did.
 
Teslas illuminate the brake lights when regen hits a certain level. My understanding is the car mimics traditional brake light operation.
Including AP.
Have watched the screen while wifey is driving; the brake light indicators light up.

You might be interested in Tesla's Dynamic Brake Light technology, which flashes the brake lights under hard braking.

"If you are driving over 50 km / h (31 mph) and brake forcefully, the brake lights will now flash quickly to warn other drivers that your car is rapidly slowing down. If your car stops completely, the hazard warning lights will flash until you press the accelerator or manually press the hazard warning lights button to turn them off."

All modern hybrids and EVs use some sort of threshold of regeneration or deceleration to trigger the brake lights.
 
Well that’s good if they do. I can’t tell when I am driving. I prefer any type of braking should put the brake lights on, just like the gas cars I drive. There is almost no threshold I believe before the brake light switch comes on, even before any braking begins, within the free play range. That’s the way it should be to alert drivers you are even thinking about braking. Personally I watch brake lights carefully and if someone is just starting to brake, even thinking about it, I want all the warning I can get.
I know in a manual car engine braking is there with no brake lights but that system with a simple brake light switch did have that limitation. It seems to me ev one pedal driving has some limitation too, with “thresholds.”

I take it one step further and just keep a big distance. I don't trust other drivers for anything. That way even if their lights aren't working at all I'll have more than enough time to stop.

Very true, defensive driving is best. My point I guess is Teslas have a brake pedal and the brake light will come on as soon as it is pressed even insignificantly, I'm sure, but the paddles have a "threshold." I guess it is the brakes have the capability of an emergency stop. Still, I think any significant braking capability by any method should have instant brake lights. I learned some ev's have brake lights with paddles though, I don't think all of them have had that.
 
E-Golf here - brake lights will activate above a certain regen threshold when in regen modes D2, D3 and B. I have not been able to peg where on the power/regen gauge where they kick on but they definitely do kick on. D1 drives like a normal car with engine braking, normal D coasts like a car in N so both those modes will require regular foot braking like a normal car.

You will, I hope, be relieved to know that the threshold level of braking that turns the brake light on typically is roughly the same as "engine braking" (without downshifting) in a conventional vehicle. My Prius---and I assume many other hybrids and electrics---regeneratively brakes lightly like that if you coast with foot on neither accelerator nor brake.

I agree with you that depressing the brake pedal even slightly should turn the brake light on.
 
The i3 I leased activated the brake lights when the regenerative braking exceeded a set threshold.
