Our EJ's used oil 1 -2 qts per 6K oci. I didn't forget that either. Stopped topping them off ran 'em a pint low and majority fill of rotella Ttiple portect conventional 10w30 they used less than a quart per OCI.

That fine for a high performance boxer 4 cylinder.

I ran the OEM 0w20 for the first 12k and then switched to 5w20 full synthetic since I have a bunch in the stash. Not worried about the warranty since I'll be out of it in another year anyway and I have not observed any consumption issues. Last tank of fuel netted 35 mpg.

If you mean your Outback, then you must certainly be talking about what's indicated on your dash. 35MPG in an Outback is record-breaking-level mileage!

My dash will always, ALWAYS read high, usually by 2+ MPG. It's nice seeing 30+ MPG indicated, even in the winter, but the calculator knows the truth!

My best tank of gas in the Legacy so far has been 35.5MPG (actual, calculated), driving from RI to CT, round-trip a couple of times., in the summer, at EXACTLY the speed limit between fill-ups, with ZERO traffic. Wind was negligible.
Something flatter, like the NJ Turnpike, would have netted a higher highway average, but not around here, where it's relatively hilly (not Catskills "hilly" but hillier than the flat NJT).
