Ethanol Gas

Get a new mechanic. The injectors should just need to be cleaned. GM has some injector problems. I have had ours cleaned 5 or 6 times in the last 3 years, and I know several who have done it more. The GM dealer in town says that they do about 35 injector cleanings a week and I live in a small town.

I have compiled quite a bit of anecdotal evidence on this subject. I bought a new car 12/92 and asked the service mgr. about using gasohol. His response was that the owner's manual says it's fine as long as the ethanol content didn't exceed 10%, but that the dealership had replaced hundreds of injectors on cars that burned exclusively ethanol blends. His take, which he couldn't prove, was that due to mixing, fraud or stratification, stronger mixes than 10% were finding their way into tanks.

Since then I have run into 10-12 people who drive the same car and had to replace injectors. When I would tell them that I would bet they burned ethanol, every single one responded "Yeah - how'd you know?" I never put it in my cars and have happily gone 200K+ miles with nary an injector issue. An admittedly small sample, but convincing none-the-less.

My other observations are that my son, and several other friends experienced severe vapor lock problems during hot weather while using E10 which vanished completely when returning to full unleaded.

My uneducated take - many, perhaps most, cars can use E10 without problems. Some seem to be more sensitive to whatever problems may be inherent, and so I would tend not to mandate it. Here in Iowa it already has about 80% of the market without mandates. Also, none of my mechanic friends (which is NOT a broad sampling) will put it in their cars.

I have used 10% ethanol fuel off and on for years, depending on where I fill up. The only side effect I ever noticed was that it eliminated ping in a couple of older cars without knock sensors.

well none of my vehicles are FFV

so that explains why i get such a decrease in mileage when i use it.

fine by me i'll stick to regular 87 like i have been.

Kev, I can live with the chewing gum, wood screws and cat litter, but I would never forgive a gas station for wasting perfectly good vodka in that way.

Interesting thread. I usually buy gasoline at either of two Sunoco stations in my area and there is a sticker on the pump that says '10% ethanol'. I noticed the sticker showed up a couple years ago. I recently bought gas a few times at a new station (supermarket gas station - don't know where they get the gas, but didn't see any 10% ethanol indication) and I got a few miles/gallon better mileage with it.

I don't think methanol is used too much because it can be very corrosive in fuel systems especially if it doesn't have the proper cosolvents. However, the inexpensive drygas is methanol; I think the other is isopropyl.

I think my car owner's manual says it good for 10% ethanol.

Ethanol and bio diesel is the future. Good, Bad or ugly get used to the idea. Some stations in Iowa sell 85% ethanol. It costs less than regular gasoline but you get less mileage. Also in Iowa we pay less for 10% ethanol because only the real gasoline is taxed and not the ethanol. kwg
