I was just at Walmart and ran into a killer deal. 5L jugs of Esso Extra 5w-30 for $7.99Cdn limit 2 per customer. Regular price $14 per jug. I bought two and I think I am going to buy another 2 tomorrow. Is this as good as a Petro-Can oil or Castrol GTX 5w-30?? Should I be stocking up on this stuff??

Looks pretty good to me. Dont really have any experience with it since I'm from the US.

I just cant believe that it is this Price. I am going to go and buy another two jugs today. If its not comparable to Castrol GTX or Petro-Can oil I will just run shorter OCI.

Which Petro-Canada oil are you comparing it against? Maximum or Supreme?

The Petro-Canada oils have slightly better pour points than the Esso Extra (-39 for Max, -36 for Supreme). The rest of the specs are very close.

The Esso Extra data sheet is almost 2 years old and the Petro-Canada data sheets I have are even older, so the formulas for both oils have probably changed for the better.

$7.99 for a 5L jug is an amazing deal for brand name oil.

Just picked up another two jugs. I am thinking of mixing this oil with some Esso XD3 0w40. I wonder how it would work together? Any Ideas?

Just for the record the sheet I pulled the info from was for a SM/GF-4 Formulation. How much it may have changed in the 21 months since it was posted I have no idea.

In my opinion Pour Points are meaningless. To subjective. If you want to decide which oil handle extreme cold the best I would look to the MRV LPT if available.

YA I saw that deal yesterday at Wal-Mart around here.It should be allright for 5000km oil changes.I use the Esso XD-3 and go 8000km.Mixing both should be fine.

So if mixing Esso Extra5w30 and Esso XD-3 is ok. Would I be able to mix the Esso Extra with some Mobil 1. I think they are both owned by Exxon. I have 1 jug of 5w30 of Mobi1 1 I have to get rid of. I need 6.5L for my Hemi but I dont want to buy any more Mobil 1 because you guys have brain washed me to use PP.

Mixing oils is no big deal, they will all mix together. Some people don't like to mix oils due to the different additive packages in the oils. They MIGHT fight each other or "clash".Then there's the other camp that like to mix to get their oil the way they think it should be.If you are on this site then you will worry about this stuff. Most people don't care whats in the crankcase as long as the key makes the vehicle go.Welcome to oil #@$%!!

According to the Esso tech (his number is on the lable of your Esso oil bottle), he fully endorsed my mixing of any XD3 syn with XD3 conventional oil. He did suggest sticking to the same brand in mixing but admitted mixing brands would "probably" be okay.
