Esso 0w-40 VS Mobil Delvac 5w-40

Has anybody here heard the term "mixed fleet"? Provided the viscosity is acceptable an HDEO would be fine. I believe Delvac is actually thinner once the engine reaches operating temperatures. I know it isn't what you asked but my vote is for XD3 0w-30 or Amsoil series 3000 5w-30. I believe Amsoil founder Al Amatuzio uses series 3000 in his gasoline vehicle. I think XD3 0w-40 is too thick of a 40 weight for an engine that specs 30 weight. Even XD3 0w-30 is plenty thick in that case. My 2 cents. I hope its constructive.

BlazerLT,

look back in the thread, there are several Canucks that did recommend Esso's great XD3 but soon to be history PAO technology....
don't pop a brain blood vessel from high viscosity over pressure

If your car took 5w-30 and you lived in Canada and can get either one for free. Which one would you choose and why?

If either were free as long as I used them, I'd use the Esso 0W-40 in all the off-warranty vehicles I service. If I had a limited quantity of free oil and didn't have to use it, I'd sell it to my buddies with diesels and use 0W-30 and 5W-30 oils. It's not ideal, but I really don't think it will cause any problems or reduce engine life.

oil changer,

hollywood's original thread question was "Esso 0w-40 VS Mobil Delvac 5w-40?If your car took 5w-30 and you lived in Canada and can get either one for free. Which one would you choose and why?

i answered that truefully and concisely.....selling oil from work may get him fired....would in the business i own......

you also forget that Exxo XD3 is PCMO rated SJ

are you recommending w20 in Alberta summer heat in a loose 2.4 GM 4 cyl rated for w30?

hollywood stated he was not concerned about minor fuel mileage decrease so that is mute point

"thin to win" is a loser and doesn't cut it on race track with cast pistons and loose bearing clearance

1. I would use the Esso. I LOVE 0WXX oils and use them in everything year-round.
2. I did not tell him to sell it from work nor did the poster. He just said if you can get it free...
3. I would not recommend using 20 weight if a manufacturer specifies a 30 weight. Maybe, just maybe I would on a limited, light-duty basis during the dead of an Alberta winter (ie. short trips or on/off a lot etc.).
4. SJ is getting a little long in the tooth for a new vehicle.
5. I have used 0W20 in a F150 5.4 towing a boat/camping gear through the Mojave desert with 110F ambient temertatures. Truck runs great. Baker, California - home of the world's largest thermometer.
6. NASCAR uses 20 weight oils albeit custom blended.
7. Thin to win, baby!

Ive used the Series 3000 in my Tacoma with no ill effects and probley go back to it when i change the oil this spring. Currently im running Series 2000. Between the two there was no change in gas milage.
