Part of a potentially much larger thing that is going on here, I won't mention it just yet in case it doesn't happen, but what do you all think about the Equinox? Specifically in this case, the 2011 Chevy Equinox LTZ with the 3.0L DI V6, and 6 speed auto transmission. The person who may be getting this wants pretty much every option. Rear entertainment, probably Navigation display. Ignoring the "more things to break" because this person doesn't care, this person WANTS all the options. By the way, no this is not me that is interested in the equinox.

My sister and her husband bought a new equnox a few years ago, I do not know what size engine. The first long distance trip they took with it, it over heated to the point they had to have it towed to a dealer. Darn thing had less than 1K miles on it when it did that. Realy turned me off.

My understanding is that the V6 isn't particularly powerful and is extremely thirsty compared to its competitors.

As most people here know from reading my comments, I don't get the warm and fuzzies over DI engines. GM is currently addressing issues one of which is recalibrating the OLM, and the carbon deposits on the intake valves is old news too. Tough call since the current trend is toward DI. It isn't a bad looking vehicle though.

My brother has a 2005. It's lackluster at best. At 58k it needed a head gasket and both front wheel bearings replaced. Hopefully the new ones are better.

Pass.

I've seen quite a few Chevy Traverses (which I assume use the 3.0L V6) that smoke.

I'd really stay away from anything with DI until all of the problems are sorted out. Never be an early adopter.

I have an 07. Which shares nothing with the 11, mine has been rock solid. The 05 did have a headgasket problem, it wasn't the engine, it was the gasket itself. The gasket was actually installed with a defect in it that came like that from the gasket manufacturer. It wasn't discoverd until late in production that year.

As far as the new ones go, I haven't heard a bad thing on the Equinox bored I am at, and where I am at work one guy has a Terrain and the other a Traverse, both are very happy with them and have not had any DI related issues.

I would like to see where the 3.0 is smoking or why he should pass on this particular vehicle. Most of my car "stuff" is reading about GM cars. I have heard nothing of the recalibration and can't find anything about it on the internet. Please post a link or your source.

Run, scream, and yell your way away. I've heard nothing but complaints from the folks I know who have them.

What about something from Hyundai/Kia, or a Ford Edge? If they're looking for something that looks like a SUV, those are other choices.

+ on the Pass. I had one for approximately 14 months and got rid of it.

I have been looking at buying a KIA Sorento EX V-6 276 HP with the same features you mentioned. 100 Thousand Mile Warranty.

We own/have owned 4 Hyundai vehicles - well pleased with them and the Sorento is based on the same engine and transmission as the Santa Fe. It is made in West Point Georgia. The 2012 models are at dealers now.

To be honest, this is my mom we are talking about. I'll start a new thread about it, but my parents are seriously considering trading in all 4 of our current vehicles, and buying/leasing an equinox, and getting 2 new Cruzes at the same time. My mom REALLY likes the Equinox, even more than the edge. She was shocked at how quiet the one we test drove was on the highway. She went to the Chevy dealer more to please me than anything, and she ended up liking everything better anyway (She's always been a Ford girl)

She likes the equinox, and both my dad and the salesperson, and even I have to admit, the V6 for Towing ability might be the better choice. One way or the other it gets better fuel economy than our expedition, while simultaneously being more comfortable, and actually about 32HP more powerful. She wants the V6 AWD.

My dad and I would both get a Cruze of some variation. Since I drive a lot of highway miles, and he will be commuting to and from NY/ME/CT starting early next year, on weekends, he needs something more fuel efficient than the Expedition/Jeep. The Jeep is hardly being driven these days, and the Truck has a few issues, including needing a set of Tires, which will run $1000+. Mustang cannot be driven in winter (well can, mom doesn't like to, she "takes it off the road" from the insurance company during the winter. And my car isn't in my name, we would like to get a car in my name. All things considered, she thinks they will probably be able to work somekind of at least a deal on trade in, since we would want to trade in 4, and get 3. Plus, I get GM Employee Pricing through Best Buy, and my parents do through the Military.

Correct. If all goes the way it should according to pretty much everyone, we should at least break even, if not come out ahead with the Focus. I'm fine driving the same kind of car as my dad has, as long as they are different colors. lol

I have read that Ford is having much trouble with their new navigational system and the entertainment system.

You can find out more about it by doing a search on the internet.

Many unhappy campers I understand.

Absolutely look at the Cruze Eco variants. As long as you don't mind rowing your own gears, they're very fun to drive little cars that get very good highway fuel economy. The shift knob is horrible, but that's about my only beef with the car.

You guys have to be talking about the previous gen Equinox they share nothing with the 2011.
If they were as bad as you guys say the mean the SRX, CTS, Terrain or any other 3.6 or 3.0 DI variant would be sucking.
This is not the case.
I love when people talk about something they don't own or just say people complain with no model info or what year the car is.
This place at times absolutely kills me.

Yes, there are a lot of uninformed posts in this thread. I own a 2011 Terrain (GMC cousin to the Equinox) with the 3.0L V6 and 6 speed auto. I test drove every small SUV on the market and this was by far the attractive, quietest and most refined vehicle in this segment. GM did an extensive redesign on the 2010+ models, fit and finish is excellent, interior details are executed well.

Back to the powertrain, I get 22 MPG average city/highway, which is the same exact mileage my 2008 Taurus company car gets. The 3.0/6 speed combo is mated well, but of course I want more power (don't all gearheads) and I think the 3.6L would have been a better fit without any mileage penalty. I am still very happy with it though. It has plenty of power.

Like all GM vehicles as of late, this is a HEAVY vehicle and could use a diet, but it is loaded to the hilt and aces all of the safety tests. Additionally it feels solid and well put together, so I am thinking the weight penalty is well worth it.

All 2012 Terrains and Equinox LT/LTZ models will feature a touchscreen radio with Pandora streaming, plus available lane departure and frontal accident avoidance systems. It might be worth the wait for these features, plus rumor has it that the cost for navigation will drop quite a bit.
