It was prolly the destruction of his electronics that got him the jail time. Under circumstances and figuring on small unit cohesion, perhaps a more understanding treatment was in order. Gee whiz. Why ruin a young man's life over such dumbness? After all, they don't let just anyone serve in summerines. Right?

Some of those things --> answer: welcome to the world. Some people are literally more important than others in certain contexts. A very influential, high-ranking politician or member of the military will always have more leeway than some low-ranking sailor. That should not be a surprise to anyone.
