engines hard on oil?

What makes one engine "hard" on an oil compared to another oil? For example, if you compared two identical peolple with identical driving habits, climates, etc., and the only difference was one had a pushrod SBC V8 and the other a Japenese DOHC 4 cyl. Which one would break down or use up the same oil faster?
 
In general, I'd say the DOHC would probably beat up the oil the quickest.

depends on if it has slider cams or rollers, timing chains or belts, wierd hot/cold spots or not, high valve spring pressures or not... (ie a "built" chevy V8 vs a stocker) the former harder than the latter. Then you've got oil cooled turbos (file under "hot spots), high hp per CC displacement per liter of oil capacity (most little Japanese cars)... all tear up oil. More cams means more gears and wear spots on the tips of valves etc.

Old school cars with poor/no PCV venting won't evaporate the crud out of the sump. Imperfect carburetion, overcooling, or mistuned cars can dump fuel past the rings and screw the oil up faster... really anything systematically bad for the engine is bad for the oil.

Getting a bunch of dirt ingested through a bad or poorly designed air filter will screw up the motor and make you want to dump the oil, but that's kind of a chiken-and-egg situation.
 
It has been said that Toyota 3liter V-6 engines are tough on oil and that is what causes the potential sludge problem.

I just got one in a Solara and plan to change with Mobil 1 no more than every 5K. If I was using a dino, any dino, I would change at 3K as recomended by the service manager.

You must be talking about the K&N?
