Hey all,

I have had some engines built the last few years with the shops recommended oil included. This latest go around is a roller and has been filled with Klotz 10w-40. I did a little reading on it and im not exactly sure im best using this to drive on the street with. Previous build was Schaeffers 7000 series with added ZDDP, but is there an upside to the ZDDP when not using flat tappets?

I use Amsoil Z-Rod in another flat tappet I have. Being that true racing oils arent filled with detergent, and being that this engine is a roller cam, can you offer a small group of oils better suited to withstand a carbed street driver? Thanks,

AR

Just go to Walmart and get a Euro 0W-40 grade that has Porsche A40 approval. That is a world-class oil and will be more than sufficient here, plus a whole lot less expensive than Klotz, Schaeffer or Amsoil.

Or if you like Amsoil and want to use it, then buy the equivalent Euro formulation from them. That would be a very good oil as well.

Goes with how?
As in how thin it is at startup on an older V8. I dont know anyone personally running anything less than 10W-30 in their old performance cars, still a lot of folks seem to like 10W-40 and the 20W-50. This is why I joined as well because conventional information often seems a lack in basis.

That’s not what the winter rating means. The 0W-40 is a 40-grade and guarantees pumpability below -30 or so. That’s all it means. It’s not thin at startup.

A Euro 0W-40 is a very capable 40-grade oil. Many 10W-40 oils are not as capable.
