If you look at some of those German oils (Fuchs in particular) it has almost no zinc or phos. The wear levels on their UOA's are amazingly low. I don't know what else they have in them ie. stuff u don't see on normal UOA's but it makes me wonder about the effectiveness of ZDDP.

You might be able to run a much bigger blade AND get more mowing acreage per tank of fuel

Yes but those don't seem to be available here so high Zinc and Phos it is...

More is not always better, but more than 900ppm would be better :) Recall with a high POE base competing for surface area you may need higher zddp % to get the same effect as say 1500ppm in a group II base.

I read somewhere today, and i was going to check for accuracy, that Zink and Phosphorous levels (they do work hand in hand, yes) levels have been going down in Oils for some time, and are at their lowest in API SM. The logic was that Oil manufacturers are putting other things in Oil to reduce wear.

This came up in a question about whether or not adding a quart of ther "Rislone ZDDP additive" to Oil at an Oil change (to a car that might need it, like a 70s engine) is a good idea, or would hurt anything.

Is this true?

Is that what that sweetish smelling blue oil in the yellow bottle Rislone stuff is..ZDDP? Or are you talking about a different Rislone product marked ZDDP?
 
0W-20 through 10W-30 API SM oils have gone back to the same zinc levels as the '60s and '70s. The higher levels needed to prevent oxidation in hotter running small engines of the '80s have been replaced by better base stocks and other anti-oxidants.
This hasn't been a problem in most non-race engines past break-in.

Thicker oils than those above can still be SM (but not ILSAC GF-4) and are exempt from the lower zinc/phosphorous levels.

A couple examples of higher zinc SM rated oils are Castrol Syntec 20W-50 and Mobil 1 15W-50.

Rislone "Engine Oil Supplement" not the regular oil or engine "Treatment."
It's new. It's on Rislone's website. AAP has it. It's still in a yellow bottle...but bigger size.

Never opened one up nor seen it, but it is a yellow bottle looking an awful lot like PYB and it says "The ZDDP additive."

Oh okay, so it's a new product! I always wondered what the regular old Rislone engine treatment was supposed to be & do. I guess it'll remain a mystery IDK. Wally's around here just have the original one.

I often wish we had these giant retail troughs here in Canada, where we had access to incredible deals.
