One of my owners manuals even went to the trouble of explaining the sensible soaking up of the energy with the engine instead of dissipating it in heat using the brakes. I think it was in my 76 Chevette's owners manual.
Unless these people are hypermiling, I've never seen such a big natural consensus of not using the engine to soak up this energy. About the only thing I'd say that I've seen in variance (over my 36 years of driving) is that some will actually try to get 1st gear integrated into the process, where 2nd usually works best until a full stop is achieved.
