Yup. Its me again.

So every one says the 4.0K Jeep Inline 6 likes thick oil. Rotella, GC, TDT, M1 0-40 all have been spoken about - how about that yummy sounding Eneos 0-50 !? Go easy on me OverKill. I know - 0-40 is golden.

How about you try it and let us know?

It's pretty hard to make a shear stable 0w50, but maybe Eneos somehow managed. Most likely it'll shear to a 40 grade in no time, in which case why not just use a more shear stable Xw-40 to begin with?

I personally prefer "thick 30's" for the 4.0 and think most 40's would be overkill. A 5w40 or light 10w40 might work pretty well though, it's on my "to try" list but when I tried a 15w40 it was way too heavy. I had to drain some and add a quart of MMO so it would run properly.

Mobil 0w40 might be golden on BITOG but a couple of us suggested it to be less than stellar for the 4.0 due to sky high iron ppm's in UOA's.

I agree with Miller88, the 4.0 would probably run 100k on used cooking oil without issues, but picking an optimum oil for it is fun.

Can you define "sky high?"

That's a myth as M1 has a 0w50 race oil.
Just because an oil has a purportedly high viscosity index which the 0w50 grade would imply doesn't mean it's any more shear prone than a lower VI multi-grade oil.
Today's high VI 0W-XX oils are often more shear stable than their lower VI 5W-XX counterparts.

Having said that I haven't tried the 192 VI ENEOS 0w50 but I and pdarm have tried the ENEOS Sustina 0w50 and the oil has proved to be a disappointment. First it's not a 50wt oil but a 40wt and it's virgin VI is only 178 not the 204 they have claimed. The VOA is below:

I don't know why the OP would want to try something heavier than M1 0W-40 but the one option would be Red Line 0W-40. This oil is heavier than Sustina 0w50.

A real good iron ppm count for the 4.0 at 3-5k is generally 15-25 ppm, Mobil 1, even the beloved M1 0w40, is usually 3 to 4 times that in the venerable 4.0.

Great oil for a bunch of other applications though, no question. But I wouldn't run it in an older Jeep.

Here's one on M1 0w40. There is another that is equally horrifying but I can't find it right now. I didn't save it since I don't consider Mobil 1 a good option for my Jeep.

Only two UOA's of M1 0w40 in the 4.0 I'm aware of, but neither one was good. Other M1 oils tend to produce very high iron in the 4.0 as well. Usually closer to normal are the Mobil 1 high mileage variants, often they will show iron ppm of 30-40. Better, but since so many other oils (like Rotella, or Maxlife) consistently produce 15-20 ppm why use the Mobil?

For the record, I am NOT anti-Mobil. I am "anti-Mobil in the Jeep 4.0". But it's still a free country, anybody can use whatever they want.

The Eneos is probably uber expensive. If you want an excellent cheap 50 weight,go to Walmart and get a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 15w50.

What determines whether a 4.0 engine likes a given oil or not in your mind?

His experience here at BITOG, Don.

I agree with him. Mobil syns are historically higher in Fe wear numbers.

Two of my best UOA's on my 2.5L were on Delo SAE30 and GTX 10W40. Single digit wear numbers for BOTH seasons of uber-beaten trail runs and drives to get ice cream.

If memory serves, the best UOA here, in a 4.0L, was on Havoline 10W30 in the SL flavor.

Great. So it sheared to 40wt while it was still in the bottle.

Whether it only makes it to 300K or if it makes it to 500K haha.

They aren't picky but it is somewhat fun to play around with.

There is not much point trying to figure out if a particular oil is good or not without a cross check, preferably one before and one after use with another oil brand. All I can say about the Jeep UOA is that it shows some bad upper end wear although the main bearings and rings are OK, BUT the air filter or air quality are not good as can be seen from the high Silicon figures.

I will never understand putting 15w40 in a 4.0L or what the OP is thinking , a 50 weight oil. These engines run best on 10w30 its not rocket science and neither is the motor. Just use QS Defy 10w30 and call it a day. Defy has all the additives this engine requires and has turned in some very good UOA's as well. Plus this oil is very affordable, why any other oil is considered for this glorified tractor engine I will never know.
