I've put out a fire with a standard fire extinguisher and saved my house. $15K in damage. Burning trash can beside house - burned up the side. I was a few feet from it with a standard 5 pounder and it took 2 to get it plus a hose.

That is true of many types of fire extinguishers. Many people do not know how to use one correctly. I've seen people trying to put out small car fires by standing 15 feet back and spraying in to the flames.

The first rule of using a fire extinguisher, read the instructions before hand so you know how to use it properly. Getting too close can catch YOU on fire. Dry chemical powder extinguishers, will leave a reside that blankets the area on fire. Even on windy days. Sure it may make a bit of a mess, but at least you should have something left to repair when it all over.,,,
