Electronic throttle control...

For the purpose of clarity, 99% of my mileage with the Mz3iT is on rural two lane Hwy. No left lane available except for head on crashes. The old folks and agricultural traffic (hay wagons) still usually pass me by. Once on a rare pass I punched the Mz3 to 5500rpm's and before I could tap the brake I was at 85mph and climbing before easing off the throttle. I wish my lovely bride would let me get behind the wheel a little more. Is this all a dream? obbop. You da bomb.

I rented a Cobalt recently and found the DBW very unsatisfactory. At any speed, flooring the pedal gave you a good half-second delay before anything happened - bad, bad news. When driving up an incline, the pedal was more like an on/off switch; you get WOT acceleration or a sort of feckless slowdown.

The DBW on a BMW 330i was much better, but still felt disconnected.

DBW on the new MX-5 and Mazda3 also felt pretty good, but disconnected. It wasn't difficult to get a worrying delay in the MX-5's throttle response.
 
My wife's car a 2005 Legacy GT wagon (250HP) has it. I never have noticed anything but I absolutely love the motor.

I believe on the 2007 model they now have a 3 choice switch that controls the response of drive by wire for better fuel economy, normal driving(our 2005), or extra rapid throttle response.
 
I have a 2006 Forester with DBW. Was getting some hesitation that was acutally being caused by the variable valve timing not being learned.
5 quick WOT's in 2nd gear(AT) from 0 to 35 and back fixed the problem.
 
I dont feel so bad with the trailblazer throttle by wire now! Really the only time you notice it is if you floor it or otherwize do things you shouldn't to it. Other than that it's seamless and the CC works excellent. If you want to clean the throttle body, it sure is easy to R/R. 4 bolts, one wiring connector and one EVAP hose & she's off. There is no IAC and the TPS is built into the unit. The only other sensor is the accelerator pedal position sensor. Hopefully there will be a zillion of them on the road bringing the cost of replacement parts down.

Dunno about any other vehicles, but the Saab 93 uses two potentiometers (at the gas pedal end), one of which alreads reads exactly half the resistance of the other one. Redundancy is a good thing, but I wonder how the software handles a fault. At least it would know with two potentiometers to compare.

On the Contour it doesn't push back against your foot but you can still feel it in the gas pedal (and hear the electric motor inside the box working).
 
throttle by wire blows, it just does not respond the same way - revved a bmw and took my foot off and it just kept revving! slowly dropping the rpm's - I hated it.
 
That's more of an emissions control device than it is the fault of the electronic throttle. They may use the electronic throttle to keep RPMs up, but it's something they programmed into the ECU that's actually on purpose.
 
My 2006 Honda Odyssey has it, and I don't notice any difference between any other car I've driven. I'll have to try this stepping on the brake while pressing on the accelerator and see what happens.

I think the mid-90s Firebirds and Camaros used this to keep the rear end where it belongs. I remember stomping the gas on a V8 Firebird and when wheelspin began, the gas pedal actually pushed back against my foot. Very unnerving.
 
I do not care for it. I have it on my 2003 Camry. If I had an automatic or lived someplace that did not get below 40-50 degree's outside I would not mind it so much.Under could counditions and cold start you can not drive through the parking lot at a slow speed with out it getting jerky. Instead of haveing a cold start circuit they relie on the standards injectors to perform this function. It also try's to use it's cam phaseing ability. So when I would get in my car after work to go home I had to drive throught the parking lot at 10MPH to avoiding fighting the computer for throttle control and cam phaseing games. This only happens int he winter time after like 8hours of sitting. If you sit their and let it warm up then it does not do this at all. I am not going to sit in a cold car to let it warm up.

I do not like drive by wire, throttle by wire or fly by wire. I do not like being a voteing member in vechiles I want to be in complete control!It add's complexity wich does nothing for the owner other then add to future repair costs!
 
Electronic throttle, electric steering, cruise control, ABS, traction control, ignition switch not connected to the starter anymore, WHAT DO THEY NEED US FOR???

The emissions are probably lower if the throttle does not bounce around with every bump, and it probably allows leaner cold starts since there's no worry of stalling when you open the throttle and the pressure rises so high that the gas no longer vaporises properly.
 
I love the drive by wire system on my Corvette! The pedal never feels stiff in the winter like it did on cars with throttle cables. And it also doesn't have that typical GM feel where 10% throttle pressure gives you a 50% throttle opening! If you touch it lightly, the car moves slowly and that makes it very easy to drive on icy/snowy roads too.

Many implementations of gasoline fuel injection have no cold start circuit. They also aren't jerky in cold weather. As I recall the implementations of fuel injection that did use a cold start circuit were all rather primitive in the CPU and software departments.
