From the sounds of it a few years back, Speed Queen may not be what they used to be. For clothes dryers, my experience has been Whirlpool is a safe, relatively inexpensive bet.
We've been rocking an LG TROMM front load clothes washer that I bought new around 2004-05 for about $800 from BLowes or HD (don't recall). This is for a family of 6. It gets tortured for sure. I'm not sure I'd buy a new LG appliance these days, but got lucky with this one so far.
GE Appliances is now part of Haier. Hotpoint and GE Cafe/Profile are also part of that.
Electrolux owns Frigidare, Tappan and is now the main ODM for Kenmore since Whirlpool cut ties with Sears. Electrolux also owns Eureka vacuums as well.
Speed Queen's raison d etre of landromats is no more - most of them are going with Dexter machines now. Cheaper, they use a off-the-shelf VFD and motor and are built pretty well.
FWIW, I've revived a 21 year old Maytag Neptune dryer with all new OEM roller bushings and a new belt and that thing will keep on ticking. The Samsung washer I've bought for the parents OTOH is rusting and groaning away - the drum support bearing is bad, but it's only available as part of the motor assembly. It was less problematic that the 1st gen Neptune washer it replaced but still. I think I'll order a Maytag or Whirlpool front loader. Their neighbors have an LG that's 2-3 years older but had only one major repair done to it. I think I'm done with Korean appliances and phones.
The funny part was the Maytag-designed Neptunes were hot garbage - they had to work with Samsung to supply them as an OEM before Maytag was bought out by Whirlpool. Whirlpool's Duet HE frontloaders were Philips designed before Whirlpool bought out the appliances arm of Philips. Hence why they were made in Germany.
