I wanted to replace a closet light (ugly bare bulb with pull chain) with a "prettier" light (still with pull chain).

So I bought one for $10 at lowe's today and got busy .. well, I hit a snag regarding the size of the outlet box the light would attach to. The mounting strip that came with the new light has approximately 2.75'' between the screw holes for mounting to the box. The box, however, is pretty large and has about 3.5'' between the attachment points.

So, does anyone know if there is an adaptor of some sort available for these kind of situations? I'd rather not get in the attic and replace the whole box.

Thanks.

Return the light for a different one or go back to Lowe's and ask them about the adapter possibility??

if the light fixture will cover the present electrical box, go back to lowes and take a box of the same size from the electrical department and go over to the light fixture area and there should be some larger type adapters for lack of a better word, i have run into this on my house and they do have them out there,, home depot and menards localy for myself are where i go for this sort of thing

FYI current code says you have to have a flourescent light in closets unless you have a huge amount of airspace around the fixture.

The adaptor will typically be a scissor/ X brass thing with a hollow hinge, typically the hinge has about 1.5 inches of thread on a part poking out of it but sometimes none.
