After years of using a straight razor, I'm thinking of asking for an electric razor for Christmas. Checked out Epinions, Amazon and Consumer Reports for ratings, but can't make up my mind which type is better (foil/screen or rotating head).

Right now I'm leaning towards a Braun 7526 Syncro (on sale for $47 at Amazon; list price is $140).

Any opinions?

Thanks.

I've used both foil and rotating head and I'll say that the rotating head have always worked better for me. I'd always get missed hairs with the foil.

I also prefer the non rechargable plug in style. I've got an outlet right next to the sink and the razor is always running at full speed.

Considering the season, I am proud to say that I have the one that Santa rides on, a Norelco. I have used nothing but Norelco for at least 10 years and I have always been very happy.

Now, as I start to think about it, who would take razor advise from Santa? It's obvious he doesn't spend too much time shaving.

The foil type gives me a pretty good shave, but I don't have much experience with the rotating heads.

One thing to consider about foil shavers--the foil is fragile, so plan on replacing it if the shaver is ever dropped. I think I also used one for so long that the blades wore through the foil. Either way, broken foil will cut you.

I have been using straight razors for the last few years because I got tired of buying $20 blade/foil packages.

I have used both, and my last two have been rotating heads. Just yesterday I received a Norelco Speed XL 8140XL and I have to say it is the best-cutting electric razor I've ever used.

I have no brand preference and have had good luck with Braun in the past as well.

I've used electric shavers off and on for over 14 years now; my current one is a Norelco rotary. I still think my old Remington Micro Screen gave the best shave of any of them, certainly better than the Norelcos. Then again, YMMV...

I like the Panasonic Linear wet/dry shavers. They perform better for me than Braun or Norelco. However, for me, NO electric shaver can get those stubborn neck hairs. On workdays, I'll shave in the shower with the Panasonic, but follow it up with a disposable razor to get the hairs the electric can not get. Some guys have great results with an electric, but I get marginal results at best.

It seems like foils work better on some guys, rotary on others. Foil type works best for me. I also like the Panasonic shavers. I have used Braun in the past and found that the reliability was poor (the blades would wear holes in the foil after about a year- I never have had that problem with any other shaver).

I have always used a rotary since I was about 16. I've tried the foil type but they seem to pull the hair sometimes and that would hurt like he!!.

One thing I'd like to mention is when you switch - either from blade-to-electric or electric-to-blade - give your skin at least one month to adjust to the new shave. It's not fair to judge the two methods against each other without this period of adjustment.

My face is too small to use rotating head. Foil missed some area but at least I won't have a patch left in my face where the rotating head can't reach.

Norelco rotary, corded. The same one has lasted over a decade. I tried the Remington foil type before and didnt like it. Two weeks is the absolute minimum trial period for any shaving method.

I've used a Braun Syncro for a couple of years now and it's great. Just replaced the foil and blades. Before that I had a Norelco and a Panasonic.

I've found that to get the very best shave with any shaver I need to use Williams 'Lectric Shave. Without it any of my shavers will miss hairs on my neck, especially around a surgical scar that I have. With it my Braun doesn't miss anything. I switched to the Braun because the rotary was too hard to trim the edges of my beard with. The Braun gives me a nice clean cut at the beardline and has no trouble handling a couple days growth of beard..

straight razor for me..........

People other than barbers still use straight razors? I have an old Gillette safety razor which was my dad's 'til he passed away almost 36 years ago...

But a straight razor is another story- always wanted to try one though. If I do I'll make sure I'm close to a hospital!

I've used both and the foil was far inferior - always missed hair. Although they advertise a Braun one on TV that's supposed to cut hair growing in all directions.

Ha ha, that's what I'm saying. For me, I tried rotary and it was far inferior - always missed hair. (And it was a pretty good one.)

It is really interesting. Must have to do with the shape of the face, thickness of the hair, or flexibility of the skin or something.

I have been able to make do with every one I have owned (rotary or foil), some just took a lot longer to get acceptable results than others.

Smart move for CT would be to start off with a cheap one until you know what type and style works best for you.

I was once told by a guy in a shop specializing in razors, that it depends on hair and skin type as to which you should choose. Foils will work for some and not others and the same goes for rotaries. He recomended a rotary for me and it has worked well for the last 11 years. I believe I am now on the 4th set of blades for this unit.
