Just watch "Formula E". (It's the same battery powered nonsense). Basically it's a bunch of old, washed up F1 drivers, that would be sitting in a mansion or a yacht getting wasted, if it hadn't come along to "resurrect" their finished careers that weren't much to begin with.
For "pit stops" they quickly get out and run to another freshly charged car, so they can finish the race. It's almost comical to watch. They have a minimum amount of time they cannot get released under, once they enter the car. This is to insure they have sufficient time to strap into all of their safety gear, before they go whirring off into the distance.
